Proteolysis is the breakdown of proteins into smaller polypeptides or amino acids. Proteolysis is carried out by enzymes called proteases, also known as proteinases or peptidases. Proteolysis plays an important role in many normal biological processes such as the cell cycle, apoptosis, and digestion, as well as in disease processes like cancer metastasis.
