Propp’s Character Roles
Trailer 1 – Coronation street https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9U_PBf-ZoA
DEPARTURE: (The hero leaves the home environment, this time with a sense
of purpose. Here begins their adventure.) in the establishing shot of the
trailer we see a character staring at a bottle, we then see him walk past a full
bottle (it is left ambiguous as to weather or not he took or left it creating
tension).
GUIDANCE: (The hero is transferred, delivered or somehow led to a vital
location, perhaps related to one of the above functions such as the home of
the donor or the location of the magical agent or its parts, or to the villain.)
we see two woman sitting at a table, one with an expression of distaste and
aggression and the other with an expression of fear and regret. As we hear
the more aggressive of the two saying “you pretty much said you wished he
was dead”.

Trailer 2 – East Enders - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkiobax0XPQ
The ‘villain’ (struggles against the hero) in this trailer it is presumably the
police inspector staring at while informing a man who has been arrested,
presumably on false charges. His primarily grey clothing and stern facial
features hint that he is the antagonist of the trailer.
The ‘heroes’ (AKA victim/seeker/paladin/winner, reacts to the donor, usually
marries the princess) in this trailer are presented by the man in the cell; his
innocence and peaceful manner is demonstrated through their lack of erratic
behavior and violence towards the police or his cell.
Propp’s Narrative Functions
VILLAINY or LACKING: The villain harms or injures a family member, including but
not limited to abduction, theft, spoiling crops, plundering, banishment or expulsion
of one or more protagonists, committing murder, threatening a forced marriage,
providing nightly torments and so on. Simultaneously or alternatively, a protagonist
finds they desire or require something lacking from the home environment (a potion
or artifact etc.). The villain may still be indirectly involved in the latter option,
perhaps fooling the family member into believing they need such an item. Although
there is no direct conflict in this trailer, the man being addressed by the police
shows obvious signs of harmful intention, which is anchored by his facial expressions
and the fact that locals keep their distance.
STRUGGLE: The hero and villain meet and engage in conflict directly, either in battle
or some nature of contest. The non-verbal code of the intense stare down between
the mother and the younger man connote conflict between the two. His expression
in the hospital wing window appears domineering and cold, suggesting that he may
possess an unfair advantage.

TRICKERY: (The villain attempts to deceive the victim to acquire something
valuable. They press further, aiming to con the protagonists and earn their
trust. Sometimes the villain make little or no deception and instead
ransoms one valuable thing for another.) a man is seen stabbing a sealed
condom on a wooden table. He can be seen with malicious intent in his
facial expressions and presumably wants to cause problems for the
protagonist.
PURSUIT: (The hero is pursued by some threatening adversary, who perhaps
seek to capture or eat them.) We see a presumed failed attempt at
persuasion as the fliers with denotations of “SAVE THE COMMUNITY
CENTRE”. This makes the rest of the locals appear to not care for the state
of their community as we do not see anyone noticing the bright yellow
fliers.
