graduates are leveraging their creative talents and skills
to serve others through the power of art.
Picture a credentialed art therapist helping a troubled
young child to safely express feelings of anger; a graphic
designer creating a distinctive logo for a nonprofit
organization, or a sculptor gracing a public landscape with
an installation of her work. Such images illustrate the power
of art – a power that can heal, enlighten, transform time
and space, and reveal our shared humanity. Art provides us
with new eyes, allowing us to see the unseen, embrace a
sense of wonder, and experience a more profound
connection with one another and with our world.
As you read through this proposal, we hope you will
envision the ways in which your support is vital to the
ongoing evolution of the art programs that are a priority
in the Campaign for Caldwell. Caldwell’s art therapy,
studio art, and graphic design graduates are bringing their

communication between counselor
and client, the practice has the
capacity to restore emotional balance
and enhanced mental health to those
once thought to be unreachable, but
who find solace, strength, and renewal
through the guidance of a skilled,
credentialed art therapist.
Registered and Board Certified Art
Therapists are those who have earned
a master’s degree in art therapy,
completed at least 1,000 supervised
hours after graduation and passed a
comprehensive board certification exam
before being awarded the registration
credentials of ATR-BC, or Registered
Art Therapist, Board Certified.
Researchers and clinicians throughout
the world are becoming increasingly
aware of the impact of art therapy, as
well as its full range of applications
within a variety of settings and
populations. Caldwell is leading the
charge in discovery, innovation and
exploration. The curriculum meets
the academic requirements for a
degree in counseling with art
therapy specialization.
Art therapy provides a safe harbor for
those who have nowhere else to turn:
children who have endured traumatic
physical or sexual abuse; those among
the elderly who struggle with
dementia and diminished social
connections; veterans whose service
has left them with scars, both visible
and invisible; adolescents grappling
with the pain of being bullied; and
individuals facing issues related to
autism, developmental and/or
physical disabilities.
Art therapists, whose use of creative
processes helps clients improve and
enhance their physical and emotional
wellbeing, are trained to promote
conflict resolution, behavior
management, stress reduction,
improved interpersonal skills, and
self-awareness.

Continuing Our Artistic Legacy
Caldwell’s art therapy facilities have
been identified as the area in greatest
need of improvement. The
comprehensive, five-year campaign
will provide funding for
■ The relocation and re-engineering
of the art therapy program to
encompass 1,540 square feet of
unused space within the Visceglia
building.
■ The creation of two state-of-the-art
classrooms, attractive workspaces,
and new storage units, as well as a
modern suite of offices in which
student-faculty mentorship will be
the focus.
■ Renovation of two existing
bathrooms, to include energy-efficient
upgrades

PAINTING A FEELING:
TURNING SORROW
INTO SOLACE
When she was just 13 years old,
Lori experienced a devastating loss
when her mother died of breast
cancer. Lori stopped attending
school and became increasingly
withdrawn and depressed. Her
primary activity was sitting in her
room alone, drawing.
Lori brought family pictures to the
art therapy sessions to help her
share memories of her mother with
the therapist, who suggested a
book project in which Lori could
create a story about herself and
her mother.
Using the medium of collage and
her own drawings, Lori learned to
safely express feelings of sadness,
anger, and disappointment and
to relive cherished memories in
a deeper way. Now, when Lori
experiences life events that she
wishes she could share with her
mother, she creates a page for her
special book. By sharing her book
with her family and friends, Lori
receives the comfort of their
empathy and support.
6. STUDIO ART AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
The Department of Art provides students with a comprehensive
education in the arts that fosters individual creativity, while enhancing
critical and marketable career skills.
Students progress from foundational classes in drawing, two- and-three-
dimensional design, and digital media, designed to cultivate each student’s
unique artistic sensibility within a framework of the fundamental elements
of design. Comprehensive courses in graphics, photography, painting,
sculpture, and printmaking provide students with the tools necessary to
develop expertise in a specific area.
Caldwell’s art therapy students – and those who will receive their services
in the future – benefit from the vibrant arts culture on campus, which can be
traced back to the influence of the Sisters of St. Dominic, the university’s
founders and sponsors. From stained glass to sculpture, one needs to look
no farther than our campus itself to find that art is at the core of the
identity they share with the university.
Complementing art therapy are Caldwell’s programs in studio art and
graphic design.
The Campaign for Caldwell seeks to provide the following enhancements
to these programs:
■ Creating new, remodeled spaces for graphic design, combining timeless
artistic expression with modern technology
■ Repurposing the existing digital suite into a gallery space with secure storage
■ Relocating the graphic design lab to a more functionally appropriate location
on campus
■ Assessing the range of technologies currently available to graphic design
students with upgrades made for better alignment with industry standards
GAINING FREEDOM FROM ANGER
A young boy named Sam, along with his sister and mother, fled their home in the middle of the night
to seek refuge in a shelter. Sam’s mother enrolled him and his sister in a new school and forbade them
from having contact with their father and extended family. Once a week at this shelter, Caldwell’s art
therapy students hold separate sessions for children and adult women. Although initially a reluctant
participant, once he began participating in the group, Sam was surprised to find that other children at
the shelter were experiencing the same conflicts at their homes. Through art therapy activities, Sam
found a way to express his deep longing for his father and his conflicting feelings of anger and sadness
over the terrible violence his father had unleashed on numerous occasions, upon Sam, his mother, and
sister. Upon learning to use art as a tool, he was able to express what was once unspeakable, safely
releasing stored-up tensions. Sam became free of bouts of overwhelming impulsivity that had caused
behavioral problems in school.

8. ABOUT CALDWELL UNIVERSITY
Founded as a Catholic liberal arts college in 1939 by the Sisters of
Saint Dominic, Caldwell University’s mission is to promote
intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic growth to a diverse population
of talented and deserving students. Originally incorporated as an
institution of higher learning for women, Caldwell became fully
co-educational in 1986, enabling men to receive the same high-
quality education that had been setting women on the path to
success for more than 40 years. In 1993, Caldwell – then operating
as a college – enrolled its first graduate students, which set the
stage for achieving university status. That milestone, reached in
2014, affirmed that Caldwell’s academic excellence was matched
by the rich educational variety of a university, marking the start of
an exciting new chapter in the school’s history.
