Cultural Resume
 Become a cultural expert on how an unfamiliar and
misunderstood country culture communicates in
business, healthcare, tourism, relationships, popular,
and education
 Teach the class what you and your team learned, and
help the class develop a sensitivity and appreciation for
the culture
 As a team, choose ONE unfamiliar country to research
that all team members want to learn more about and
that is demonstrably misunderstood by others.
 Your country should be one that each member of your
team is willing to devote energy into understanding as
fully as possible.
 Once your team has picked a country, your Team
Leader should email the class your country choice.
Country choices are first come, first served, no
duplicates.
 Each member will be accountable for researching the team’s chosen
country by picking one topic area to focus on.
 Each member will choose a different topic area to concentrate on.
 No member shall be required to research more than one topic area.
 Topic areas are based on chapters in the text, per the list below:
 RELATIONSHIPS (Ch. 9)–communication styles, friendships, dating,
marriage, family
 POPULAR/FOLK (Ch. 7)– cultural rituals and traditions,
contemporary, modern culture
 TOURISM (Ch. 10)– host attitudes toward tourists, social norms and
tourist expectations
 BUSINESS (Ch. 11) – work-related values, business etiquette,
communication styles
 EDUCATION (Ch. 12) teacher/student roles, grading, access, power,
social issues
 HEALTHCARE (Ch. 13) –historical and modern treatments, ethics and
health issues
 Each member will research his/her topic in accordance with the terms
and concepts of the associated chapter.
 Members may also choose to go beyond these content requirements
and research other areas of the country. For example, you may also
choose to report on religion or history.
 Each member must utilize at least four high quality sources per topic
area, in addition to our text.
 Use PROQUEST and other scholarly research banks, and also utilize
research from reliable venues such as a film or a personal interview.
 All individual topic areas must have at least four APA or MLA in-text
cites (e.g. within the slides), and a minimum of four APA or MLA
references.
 Each member must take care to paraphrase research and limit the use
of direct quotes to 30%.
 Grades will be deducted by two points for each missing in-text cite and
by five points for each missing reference. No credit will be awarded
without references.
 Each member will eventually create a Power Point (or similar software) visual
presentation of his/her topic area/chapter.
 Each individual topic area should focus on the corresponding chapter
 Each member’s individual topic area will be graded separately
 Each individual topic area should take your classmates roughly four minutes to read and
watch in its entirety (including reading text, watching/listening to video /audio clips
 M ULTI MEDIA: Each individual topic area should possess at least three different visual
aids (e.g. pictures of artifacts, dress, food, art), and must use one or more types of
technology (e.g. video clip, music, audio clip) to supplement slide text.
 Required visuals must be relevant, informative, and accurate and must directly relate to
topic area.
 Members should use links to keep the file size manageable on videos, and must direct the
class as to how much of the link we should watch.
 STRUCTURE: Each individual topic area should have :
 A brief introduction slide that previews the topic area.
 A body that highlights key points in the form of bulleted sentences, as opposed to using
large paragraphs of text or extensive quotes.
 A conclusion slide summarizing learning points and offering two suggestions for
improving intercultural relations.
 It is your responsibility to get your finalized topic area to your
team by the due date your team establishes so that it can be
included into one Team Visual that will be emailed to the class.
 Submit your finalized topic area, including cites, references, and
visuals and links, to your team’s Editor for compiling at least 72-
hours before the due date on your course calendar.
 You may be removed from inclusion in the Team Visual if you fail to
do so. If this should occur, email your topic area separately for up to
a 25% point deduction.
 Individual team members, not the team as a whole, will be
penalized for any missing or incomplete topic areas, topics that are
not cited properly, or for topics that are not consistent with the
requirements. Your team will not be held responsible for late or
missing topic areas.
 As a team, compile each individual member’s topic area into one
multi-media Team Visual.
 The Team Visual should be structured and easy to follow.
 At the start of each topic area, put a heading with the member’s
name or initials and topic area on top, and references at the end.
 Your team Leader will then email the entire Team Visual in one
file to the class via ANGEL email by the due date.
 The class will be required to review and comment on your Team Visual,
which is why your team must compile it into one user-friendly file.
 Consider using Googledocs or Dropbox.com links (give clear access
information) if the file size is too large to email.
 The Team Visual will teach the class about the country. The
Team Visual may also inform the class about other aspects of the
country culture (e.g. history, religion, politics, etc.) if your team
so chooses. Each members section is graded separately.
