Efficient planning at the outset of the project is key to achieving success – everyone knows what is expected of them, their tasks are realistically estimated and the risks are already captured, and thereby minimized. This requires the Project Manager to properly understand what it is they are delivering and what the key requirements are . If a Project Manager can realistically estimate the cost and effort required to complete the project they can k eep risks and dependencies to a minimum. How did you successfully deliver this project? Responsible for the BBC's satellite broadcasting (BGAN Network) development. This hardware/software allows BBC staff to self produce broadcast live video/audio content and provided access to digital content in over 100 countries using the BGAN terminal around the world. The design and delivery of this satellite modem including software delivery took two years and involved working with several blue chip satellite companies
An agreed project plan (I use MS project), which the team buys into along with the stakeholders The project needs clear milestones and agreed dates for client or stakeholder sign off Team members are assigned roles which are aligned to suit their core skills and strengths Risk management strategy Change request management An organised document storage for easy retrieval – a project folder share area for storage You need regular project status reports for the team and for stakeholders Hold regular minuted project review meetings where issues are raised and allocated to team members How I have I demonstrated good organisational skills with these projects? IT infrastructure relocation for the following News Bureaux: Delhi 100+ staff, Rome 10 staff, Brussels 30 staff, Washington 90 staff During US election, New York 15 staff, Moscow 90 staff, Gaza 5 staff. These relocations were all achieved whilst maintaining News and World Service broadcast continuity
The project manager needs to be able to filter relevant information to both sponsor and team members. Both parties do not need to be exposed to all threads of information. Shield team from unnecessary white noise. You need to communicate with stakeholders honestly and firmly. One needs to maintain team momentum, keeping them on task and on schedule. Ensure regular feedback and appraisals take place to eliminate problems escalating. Manage client expectations in a non-confrontational manner.
