Concept A: Radial
The radial concept came from observing the circular
distribution of fractures that emerge from the center
of broken glass. These fractures also provided a sense
of motion traveling outward which is demonstrated
in the model’s spiral staircase appearance. The
smooth gradual flow of the design invokes a calm and
harmonious mood that is contrary to the chaotic and
energetic nature of actual broken glass.

Concept B: Explosion
The explosion concept came from the direction of
the fractures that zig zag outward from the center of
broken glass. The model emphasizes this characteristic
by using jagged edges to display the tension of violent
energy frozen in place. The design uses empty space
as a point of visual interest to provide a sense of force
pushing out and expanding to greater proportions.

Concept C: Shadered
The shadered concept came from the arrangement
of individual pieces of glass that are separated by
fractures in broken glass. These fracture pathways
are recreated in the model to represent the space
between a unified object and the separated pieces of
a whole. The design represents the connection between
seemingly different components working together to
create a larger and grander form.

Early Bathroom Layouts
The first layouts for the hotel bathroom started out simple, but gradually
became more abstract in later versions. The designs focused on
combining characteristics of models A,B,and C with the shape of the
space and the arrangement of the fixtures and components in the space.

Final Bathroom Design: Push and Pull
The finished bathroom was based off of Layout B
which spreads out the lavatory, walk in shower, tub,
and water closet to provide a open and welcoming
space. Changes from the original plan include a
more spread out layout with an 8’ lavatory granite
countertop, a corner bath tub, and a privacy wall
for the water closet. The finished plan was taken
into a 3D modeling program called SketchUp to
create a visual representation of push and pull.

Photo realistic renderings of the finished bathroom
are made by adjusting the face and edge settings in
SketchUp and adjusting those images in Photoshop.

Adding the image of a guest that would require an ADA
compliant bathroom brings more realism to the renderings
of the bathroom and provide a sense of scale.
