Scattered among Texas’ dusty plains and
the rolling Hill Country are 20 extraordinary
churches that brim with art. Known as the
Painted Churches, these backcountry places
of worship are adorned with masterful
paintings, shimmering stained glass,
charming murals and gold-encrusted altars.
Four of these magnificent churches are
located in Fayette county.

Dubina
The first church was destroyed by a hurricane in July 1909.
The community came together to raise funds to build a second
church. It features simple stenciling and framed Statons of
the Cross. The church with its bright painting inside and out,
stands strong and proud against the Texas sky.

St. john the Baptist Catholic
Church
Ammansville
The Catholic Church opened in 1890. Destroyed by the
hurricane of 1909, the chrch was rebuilt only to have burned
down a short time later. The community set out to build a third
church, completed in 1919.

High hill
This beautiful church built in 1906 displays elaborate, faux-
marble columns and vaulted ceilings. This is definitely a
church you do not want to miss. The interior is made of wood
while the exterior is protected by brick resistant to fire and
storms. St. Mary’s is known as the “Queen of the Painted
Churches.”
