In North America, severe shortage of Helium was observed during Q1 2021. As a consequence of the winter storm across the USA gulf coast several plants went through an unplanned shutdown. BLM (Bureau of Land Management) had shut down its Texas based Helium enrichment unit during March for couple of weeks.
Its miscibility with water, however, is restricted. N-butanol is used as a solvent and as a feedstock for syntheses. The main commercial route for the production of n-butanol is the oxo process. This comprises the catalytic hydroformylation of propylene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen (syngas), followed by the hydrogenation of the aldehydes formed to give a mixture of n- and isobutanols.

Yellow phosphorus, the second largest consumer of phosphorus ore, an irreplaceable and non-renewable resource and closely related to people’s life, constitutes about 15% of phosphorus ore consumption in China.
China owns the largest capacity and output of yellow phosphorus in the world. However, Overcapacity has emerged as an eminent problem in Chinese yellow phosphorus industry in recent years. For example China’s capacity in 2008 is about double the size of the global demand, which is only about 800,000-900,000 tonnes every year. That suggests a very low operating rate of China’s yellow phosphorus industry about one third of its capacity during 2003-2008. What are reasons for the low operating rate, or why Chinese yellow phosphorus producers expand their capacity to such a large scale?
In China, like several years ago, most yellow phosphorus was consumed by thermal phosphoric acid and phosphorus trichloride in 2008. However, the consumption structure of yellow phosphorus is changing every year. The yellow phosphorus consumption by thermal Yellow phosphorus, the second largest consumption area of phosphorus ore, constitutes about 15% of phosphorus ore consumption in China. And phosphorus ore is an irreplaceable and non-renewable resource and closely related to people’s life,
China owns the largest capacity and output of yellow phosphorus in the world. However, overcapacity has emerged as an obvious problem in Chinese yellow phosphorus industry in recent years. For example China’s capacity in 2009 is about double the size of the domestic demand. What’s more, China has begun to restrict export of yellow phosphorus, which aggravates the overcapacity situation. That suggests a very low operating rate of China’s yellow phosphorus industry of about 40%~ 50% in recent years. What are reasons for the low operating rate, or why Chinese yellow phosphorus producers expand their capacity to such a large scale?
After few years’ structural readjustment and elimination in yellow phosphorus industry, China’s yellow phosphorus production and phosphorous chemical industry chain is much more reasonable now. How did Chinese make these achievements? What are the details of China’s yellow phosphorus industry development? What are the situation of energy consumption, waste emission and utilization situations in Chinese yellow phosphorus production?
Chinese government had implemented policies to restrict export and exploitation of phosphorus ore, export and production of yellow phosphorus since 2005. Currently in 2010, the last year for China’s 11th National Economic and Social Development (2006-2010), the development of phosphorus production has witnessed the major turning point of the industry. What is the trend of electricity price for yellow phosphorus production? What is the current production cost of yellow phosphorus and how is the production cost consisted of?
China used to export large volume of yellow phosphorus until 2008, but currently the export is limited since 2008 by increasing the tariff to 120% as highest. Though the tariff has been reduced in 2009, but the export didn’t recovery, what is the trend of China’s yellow phosphorus export?
In the past of China, most yellow phosphorus was consumed by thermal phosphoric acid and phosphorus trichloride. However, the consumption structure of yellow phosphorus is changing every year. The yellow phosphorus consumption by thermal phosphoric acid has been shrinking by consumption share in recent years, while the share of yellow phosphorus in phosphorus trichloride has been increasing. What other changes have taken place to Chinese yellow phosphorus consumption and what have driven such changes to happen? How do the limitation of phosphorus detergent and development of wet-process phosphoric acid impact consumption of yellow phosphorus?

Glycine, including tech-grade, feed-grade, food-grade, pharmaceutical-grade, is widely used as raw materials for CMC, agrochemicals and surfactant. China is not only a major production base of glycine, but also a large consumer.
Glycine has experienced strong growth momentum over the past few years especially after 2007, seeing a surge in demand at home, which pushes up capacity expansion and output increase. China’s glycine capacity is expected to reach 370,700t/a in 2010, and its output was over 150,000 tonnes in 2009.
Besides production situation, this report also provides answers to the key issues in Chinese glycine industry as follows.
(1) Chongqing Sanxia Yingli Chemical Company is the first and the only company adopting natural gas as starting raw material to produce glycine in China, and it has suffered a lot in its glycine business notably from unstable production, immature technology etc. What’s its current situation and how it will get out of the predicament to seek further development?
(2) Glycine industry has encountered poor profit and low price in 2009, due to the sluggish glyphosate. What is the development trend in 2010 and even to 2014? How about the industry integration of glycine and its upstream products?
(3) At present, in what field glycine is applied in China? Will other potential end-use segments be developed?
You can also figure out the breakdown of drivers and barriers for Chinese glycine industry, as well as the forecast on glycine development in China in 2009~2013.

Production and market of gum rosin in china 2010CCM Intelligence
"Description:
As an important pine product, gum rosin is widely used in the production of adhesive, paint & coating, rubber, food, paper and ink, batik, etc. Driven by great demand from overseas and increasing domestic consumption volume, China’s gum rosin industry developed fast in the past few years.
China has abundant pine resources, which guarantees sufficient oleoresin for gum rosin production. However, in the past two years, infestation, eucalyptus planting and bad weather such as drought, heavy rain, snow, etc. have given greatly negative influence on oleoresin tapping in major pine growing areas, especially in Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Jiangxi and Hubei. How heavily did they affect the production of gum rosin in these provinces? What kinds of measures have been taken?
Chinese export volume of gum rosin has dropped sharply in recent three years. Is it related to the adjustment in Chinese policies on gum rosin export, such as repealing export quotas, lowering export rebate?
Moreover, since most gum rosin is exported through the port of Huangpu, the price and stock of gum rosin reflect general domestic market trend. How about the fluctuation of gum rosin price in the past one and a half years and how much stock was stored in Huangpu port at the beginning of each month in the past two and a half years?
In recent three years, since more and more domestic producers and multinational corporations are engaged in the deep-processing of gum rosin, domestic consumption volume has been increasing. How about the consumption structure of gum rosin in the past three years and has the demand shifted within these major markets? What about the future prospect on major downstream industries?
The detailed answers of the above focuses will be given in this report, and it will also provide you an insightful analysis on other following aspects:
- Position of Chinese gum rosin in the world
- Production of gum rosin in the past few years in China
- Key factors influencing the price of gum rosin and pricing in the past few years
- Detail analysis on export & import of Chinese gum rosin in 2007~2009

Driven by China’s rapidly developing economy in past few years, PVC industry in China has witnessed great development. Since 2005, China has been the largest manufacturer and consumer of PVC in the world, sharing about 30% global PVC output and consumption per year.
Different from most overseas countries, China adopts both calcium carbide method and ethylene method, since China has abundant calcium carbide resources. In 2008, PVC by calcium carbide method captures 70.74% of the total output in China.
After rapid expansion in the past five years, calcium carbide PVC has encountered great competition from ethylene PVC, especially after the price fall of crude oil since July 2008. How the dynamics of raw materials has affected PVC production in China? What is the production situation with these two methods in 2008 and 2009? What the trend of China’s PVC production and market in the next 10 years, especially for calcium carbide method, will be?
Though China is still a net importer of PVC, its import volume has reduced greatly after 2003. After the price slump of crude oil in 2008, has the import and export of PVC changed in 2008 and 2009?
Major driver for the increasing PVC output in China is the growing demand from downstream industries, whose development trend and PVC consumption in the next 5-10 years are provided with forecast in details in this report.
The report also covers following aspects of China’s PVC industry:

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Executive summary:
(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is
nowadays. Please be noted.)
- Technology
At present, there are two methods to produce fumaric acid. One is chemical combination method and
the other is biological combination method. Chinese fumaric acid producers all use the former one.
There are three raw materials for fumaric acid production in China and they are benzene, acid liquor
and dregs generated in the production of maleic anhydride and acid liquor generated in the production
of phthalic anhydride.
……….
- Production
China is one of the largest producers of fumaric acid in the world. Currently there are 42 active
producers of fumaric acid in China with the total capacity of xxxxt/a as of March 2008 amounting to
over one third of the global capacity.

V Future forecast
V-1 Driving forces in the industry
- Market demand
Demand for fumaric acid has increased rapidly since 2001, but the annual output didn’t change
until 2003, being only about 25,180 tonnes, which led to a large demand gap in that year. In
the end of 2004, the average price of fumaric acid was very high, reaching RMB12,000/t,
because its output couldn’t meet the market demand.
To pursue high profit, many Chinese producers invested in fumaric acid industry. Most
installations of fumaric acid were built and put into production. That is why the capacity of
fumaric acid increased rapidly after 2003. In 2006, its capacity reached 105,000t/a. The
average increase rate has surpassed 30% since 2003. Fumaric acid industry develops rapidly,
but it still can’t meet the market demand.
With the development of downstream industries including L-aspartic acid, UPR and food
additive, the market demand will be a key factor driving the fumaric acid industry to develop in
the future.
- Raw material
Benzene
As a starting raw material for fumaric acid production, benzene directly influences the
production cost of fumaric acid. In recent years the price of benzene kept increasing which
was unfavorable to domestic fumaric acid industry.
Acid liquor generated in the production of maleic anhydride or phthalic anhydride
Fumaric acid production is also relative with the production of maleic anhydride and phthalic
anhydride because to some domestic producers, fumaric acid is only one byproduct of maleic
anhydride or phthalic anhydride. If they stop production of maleic anhydride or phthalic
anhydride, they will have no acid liquor generated in the production of maleic anhydride or
phthalic anhydride to satisfy their fumaric acid production.
- Technology innovation
At present, Chinese fumaric acid producers all use benzene oxidized method. The method will
be used a long time in future though it has some disadvantages. Chinese producers are to
improve the technology and equipment, which can promote the capacity and quality of fumaric
acid.

And in the long-term view, benzene oxidized method will be replaced by N-butane oxidized
method which is widely used in developed countries. The N-butane oxidized method is the
development trend, as it is more advanced. It has the advantages of high efficiency, high
output and non-pollution.
- Domestic policies on fumaric acid industry
Governmental policy will have great influence on domestic fumaric acid industry.
Export rebates decrease
Government policy restricting the production of producers who seriously pollute the
environment
Since the production of fumaric acid has high pollution, implementation of these policies in
China can promote the structural adjustment of the industry. The companies whose production
scales are too small to reach the requirement will be closed down, and those companies,
whose cost is higher than others for their insufficient resource, low-tech or backward
management, less competitiveness in the market, will be defeat by others and phased out.
V-2 Difficulties in fumaric acid industry
- The adjustment of export tax rebate
Since Jul. 1st
2007, export tax rebate on fumaric acid has been reduced from 13% to 8%,
which causes fumaric acid exporters to raise price to ensure their profit, thus the
competitiveness of China’s fumaric acid has been reduced in the overseas market.
After Jul. 1st
2007, the export price of fumaric acid from China increased by USD0.05/kg~
USD0.1/kg. Correspondingly, the export volume from Jul.2007 to Dec.2007 decreased by
1,645.097 tonnes year on year.

- The depreciation of US dollar
During the whole year of 2007, the US dollar has depreciated by 7% calculated by RMB, which
means that the profit of fumaric acid export has shrunk. At present, most exporters are willing
to export fumaric acid with the payment of RMB and the depreciation of US dollar acts as a
disincentive to China’s fumaric acid exporters.

V-3 Quantities forecasts of market in the next 5-10 years
Our forecast is based on economic theories and relative forecast technologies in econometrics
and, a model, established in system dynamics technology with Vensim® software by CCM, is
used to conduct our forecasts on the development of fumaric acid in China (2007-2011).
System dynamics, which has been applied in many research fields, is a useful methodology &
tool for policy analysis and assistant decision-making. The following items are integrated in the
model:
Relative data in the past
Industry chain of fumaric acid
Domestic polices on fumaric acid at present and in future
Driven forces discussed in the above
CCM’s understandings on fumaric acid industry
The output of L-aspartic acid may increase slightly in the future 5 years, CCM predicts that
output of L-aspartic acid will increase to 87kt in the year 2012, with the CAGR of 12.2% from
2008 to 2012.
- Production
In the next 5 years, the output of fumaric acid will keep a rising trend, but its CAGR will not be
