How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Udžbenik Uvod u analitičku kemiju prof. dr. sc. Njegomira Radića
i doc. dr. sc. Lee Kukoč Modun djelo je pripremljeno po uzoru
na suvremene europske sveučilišne udžbenike analitičke kemije
u kojima se kvalitativni i kvantitativni aspekti analitičke kemije
ne tumače odvojeno, nego se tijekom izlaganja povezuju s po-
moću homogenih i heterogenih ravnoteža te kinetičkih modela.
Udžbenik je namijenjen studentima preddiplomskih studija na
kojima se analitička kemija predaje na sveučilišnoj razini. Nave-
deni je udžbenik proširenje udžbenika Uvod u analitičku kemiju,
I. dio istih autora objavljen 2013. U tom su se ranijem izdanju
autori u 11 poglavlja uglavnom bavili homogenim ravnotežama,
a heterogene su ravnoteže i kinetički modeli predmet sljedećih
osam poglavlja novog, dopunjenog udžbenika.
U prva četiri poglavlja upotpunjenog udžbenika prikazana je
obrada rezultata eksperimentalnih mjerenja, tumače se osnovni
statistički pojmovi koji se primjenjuju pri obradi rezultata mjere-
nja te načini iskazivanja rezultata analitičkih mjerenja. Dan je kra-
tak pregled kemijske stehiometrije, opisani su postupci priprave
otopina i načini izražavanja koncentracija te osnove stehiometrij-
skog računa. Tumače se pojmovi aktivitet i koeficijent aktiviteta te
se razmatra kemijska ravnoteža, pri čemu se uvodi grafički prikaz
uspostavljenih kemijskih ravnoteža (vertikalni dijagrami).
Nakon uvodnih poglavlja, koja su nužan temelj za praćenje gra-
diva udžbenika, detaljno se tumače homogene kemijske ravnote-
že: kiselo-bazne ravnoteže, ravnoteže nastajanja kompleksa i ok-
sidacijsko-redukcijske ravnoteže. Svaka od navedenih ravnoteža
detaljno je obrađena i razmatrana u sljedeća dva poglavlja, koja
čine kvalitativno-kvantitativnu cjelinu. Temeljna znanja o pojedi-
noj ravnoteži nadograđuju se teorijskim razmatranjem mogućno-
sti kvantitativnog određivanja određenih analita odgovarajućom
titrimetrijskom metodom uzimajući u obzir specifična obilježja
pojedine ravnoteže te analitičku iskoristivost titrimetrijskog odre-
đivanja. Teorijska razmatranja dobro su popraćena računalnim i
grafičkim simuliranjem krivulja titracije te razmatranjem izbora
odgovarajućeg indikatora za indiciranje završne točke titracije.
Novih osam poglavlja (poglavlja 12. – 19.) počinje poglavljem
Heterogene ravnoteže, u kojem se obrađuju osnovne postavke
ravnoteža između čvrste, slabo topljive tvari i njezinih iona, rav-
noteža analita između otapala koja se ne miješaju, ravnoteža
analita između pokretne i nepokretne faze, ravnoteža između
čvrste i tekuće faze, odjeljivanje interferirajuće vrste iz uzorka
te topljivost plina u kapljevini, uvode se pojmovi produkt toplji-
vosti, koeficijent odjeljivanja i raspodjela koncentracija, čime se
daje temelj za poglavlja koja slijede. Poglavlje Ravnoteža između
čvrste, slabo topljive tvari i njenih iona razmatra čimbenike koji
utječu na topljivost taloga: ionsku jakost otopine, dodatak zajed-
ničkog iona, temperaturu, veličinu čestica i vrstu otapala. Raz-
matra se primjena heterogenih reakcija nastajanja slabo topljivih
taloga za odjeljivanje iona. Slijede poglavlja u kojima se objaš-
njava kvantitativna primjena temeljena na reakcijama nastajanja
slabo topljiva taloga – Gravimetrijske metode analize i Titracije
temeljene na reakcijama nastajanja slabo topljivog taloga. Poglav-
lje Gravimetrijske metode analize razmatra teorijske i primjenske
aspekte te analitičke metode. U sljedećem poglavlju tumače se
taložne titracije s naglaskom na argentometrijske titracije i njiho-
vu kvantitativnu primjenu.
U poglavlju Ravnoteža analita između dviju faza, ekstrakcija autori
tumače ravnotežu analita između otapala koja se ne miješaju i
ravnotežu analita između čvrste faze i otopine navodeći njihovu
važnost kao metode pripreme uzorka za kromatografsku anali-
zu – ekstrakcija otapalom i ekstrakcija čvrstom fazom. Detaljnije
se razmatra jednostavna jednokratna i višekratna ekstrakcija te
jednostavna ekstrakcija uz usporedne reakcije, tumači se utjecaj
pH-vrijednosti, formiranja kompleksa i dimerizacije analita na
uspješnost ekstrakcije, obrađuje se ekstrakcija metala prevođe-
njem u kelatne komplekse i prikazuje eksperimentalna izvedba
ekstrakcije otapalom.

Poglavlje Kromatografija obrađuje osnovna teorijska načela kolon-
ske kromatografije, u njemu se definiraju pojmovi brzina pokret-
ne faze, faktor zadržavanja i odjeljivanja, razmatra se djelotvor-
nost kromatografske kolone i objašnjavaju pojmovi razlučivanje i
teorijski tavani nakon čega slijedi objašnjenje postupka optimiza-
cije kromatografskog odjeljivanja te je dan kratak pregled moder-
nih kromatografskih tehnika: plinske i tekućinske kromatografije.
Slijedi poglavlje Izmjenjivači iona i njihova analitička primjena, u
kojem se objašnjava priprema izmjenjivača iona i određivanje
kapaciteta izmjene iona, definiraju pojmovi selektivnost i koe-
ficijent selektivnosti te prikazuje računanje koncentracije iona u
otopini nakon procesa izmjene.
U posljednjem poglavlju (poglavlje 19.) Kinetičke metode raz-
matranja se usmjeravaju prema mjerenjima pri neravnotežnim
uvjetima za razliku od prethodnih poglavlja u kojima su opisane
analitičke metode koje se zasnivaju na mjerenjima kada analit
uspostavlja ravnotežu. Definiraju se i objašnjavaju pojmovi brzina
kemijske reakcije i red reakcije te su prikazani matematički izrazi
za opisivanje kinetike reakcija prvog i drugog reda, tumače se
metode praćenja napredovanja reakcije, kinetičke metode ana-
lize sa spektrofotometrijskim detektorom (laboratorijski eksperi-
menti) i kinetika kataliziranih reakcija.
U svakom su poglavlju teorijska razmatranja dobro popraćena
primjerima rješavanja analitičkih problema. Na kraju poglavlja
nalaze se zadatci, objašnjenja važnijih pojmova vezanih za odre-
đeno poglavlje i popis literature. Udžbenik sadržava Kazalo poj-
mova i osam priloga: Pojmovnik, Konstante disocijacije kiselina,
Konstante formiranja kompleksa pri 25 °C, Standardni redukcijski
potencijali, Rješenja zadataka, Pregled korištene literature i Peri-
odni sustav elemenata. Sadržava i 145 crteža i slika, 180 riješenih
primjera te 220 zadataka s rješenjima.
Iako se svaki zadatak u ovom udžbeniku može riješiti bez primje-
ne tablica u Excelu, autori nastoje potaknuti studente na njihovu
primjenu te u prvom poglavlju detaljno objašnjavaju uporabu i
izradu tablica u Excelu, a sve su te tablice priložene u digitalnom
obliku u dodatnim materijalima koji se mogu preuzeti na pove-
znici https://www.skolskiportal.hr/uvod-u-analiticku-kemiju.
Gradivo u udžbeniku izneseno je na jasan i razumljiv način po-
lazeći od jednostavnijih primjera prema složenijima. Primjeri su
dobro odabrani, a funkcije upotrijebljene u tabličnom kalkulato-
ru jasno objašnjene, kako bi se studentima olakšalo svladavanje
gradiva obuhvaćenog ovim udžbenikom. Pozitivno je to što su
autori povezali tumačenje kemijskih ravnoteža s ravnotežama u
ljudskom organizmu i okolišu potičući studente na razvijanje svi-
jesti o važnosti očuvanja ljudskog zdravlja i zaštite okoliša. Iako je
Odlukom Senata Sveučilišta u Splitu udžbenik objavljen u ediciji
Manualia universitatis studiorum Spalatiensis, vjerujem da će biti
prihvaćen i na ostalim hrvatskim sveučilištima ponajprije zbog
kvalitete obrađenoga gradiva i suvremenog pristupa analitičkoj
kemiji.
