Children who exhibit antisocial behavior and conduct problems are more likely to develop antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) as adults. When working with a client, a social worker must make important decisions—not only about the diagnostic label itself but about whom to tell and when. In this Discussion, you evaluate the use and communication of a diagnosis in a case study.
To prepare:
Focus on the complex but precise definition of a mental disorder in the DSM-5 and the concept of dimensionality both there and in the Paris (2015) and Lasalvia (2015) readings. Also note that the definition of a mental disorder includes a set of caveats and recommendations to help find the boundary between normal distress and a mental disorder.
Then consider the following case:
Ms. Evans, age 27, was awaiting honorable discharge from her service in Iraq with the U.S. Navy when her colleagues noticed that she looked increasingly fearful and was talking about hearing voices telling her that the world was going to be destroyed in 2020. With Ms. Evans’s permission, the evaluating [social worker] interviewed one of her closest colleagues, who indicated that Ms. Evans has not been taking good care of herself for several months. Ms. Evans said she was depressed.
The [social worker] also learned that Ms. Evans’s performance of her military job duties had declined during this time and that her commanding officer had recommended to Ms. Evans that she be evaluated by a psychiatrist approximately 2 weeks earlier, for possible depression.
On interview, Ms. Evans endorsed believing the world was going to end soon and indicated that several times she has heard an audible voice that repeats this information. She has a maternal uncle with schizophrenia, and her mother has a diagnosis of bipolar I disorder. Ms. Evans’s toxicology screen is positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The evaluating [social worker] informs Ms. Evans that she is making a tentative diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Kornienko Olga CV website
This curriculum vitae summarizes Olga Kornienko's education and professional experience. She received her Ph.D. in Family and Human Development from Arizona State University in 2010. Since then, she has held several research and teaching positions at ASU, focusing on child and adolescent development, social networks, peer influence, and hormones. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health.

This study examined predictors of borderline personality features in 30 youth diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Higher scores on a measure of borderline personality features were associated with increased self-injurious behaviors, impulsive aggression, and decreased family cohesion. These findings suggest that youth with bipolar disorder exhibiting these characteristics may be at increased risk of developing borderline personality disorder. Larger, longitudinal studies are still needed to validate these predictors. The study aims to help clinicians identify at-risk youth earlier to improve outcomes through targeted psychotherapy interventions.

William Drew Rothenberg has extensive educational and research experience in psychology. He received his B.A. from NC State University summa cum laude in 2012, his M.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2014, and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill, anticipated in 2018. He has received several honors and awards and has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals. His research focuses on intergenerational transmission of family environments and risk factors for psychopathology.

Anderson, Cesur, & Tekin (2015)open up the discussion with focusing on the onset of PTSD among individuals. They present PTSD as a severe disorder with a focus on the destruction of thinking, emotions, and actions. Adamsons & Johnson (2013) argue that PTSD influences an individual to become unstable in terms of thinking and acting. Most schizophrenic patients end up either being responsive or withdrawn (Bargai, Ben-Shakhar, & Shalev, 2007). PTSD is different from multiple personalities due to the symptoms differences between the two disorders (Herring et al., 2008). Patients who suffer from the disease either hear things or see them. They have an altered personality and always feel angry and irrational (O'Mahen & Flynn, 2008). Patients show bizarre behavior. They have preoccupation when it comes to issues focusing on religion (Söderquist, Wijma, Thorbert, & Wijma, 2009). PTSD patients feel indifferent to essential situations.
Individuals who possess the disorders lack a strong personality and may not pose a danger to those around them (Baumeister, Vohs, Aaker, & Garbinsky, 2013). Chassin (2010) states that there are several causes of PTSD. Brummelte & Galea (2016) confirm that factors such as poor parenting, childhood experiences, and low motivation in life are not the causes of PTSD. (Fusar-Poli, et al., 2014) Presents an argument that the roots of PTSD are caused by various issues in the human environment that influence the minds to become unstable. Individuals may have infections in their brains, a significant factor that may lead to them having the disorder (Dein, 2017).
PTSD exists in the genetic coding of individuals which influences individuals to pass it from one generation to another with much ease (Dziwota, Stepulak, Włoszczak-Szubzda, & Olajossy, 2018). Despite the disorder lacking a cure, it does not mean that it is not manageable (Dziwota, Stepulak, Włoszczak-Szubzda, & Olajossy, 2018). Some combination of prescriptions and therapeutic techniques are vital in dealing with the disorder.

Focus on the complex but precise definition of a mental disorder in the DSM-5 and the concept of dimensionality both there and in the Paris (2015) and Lasalvia (2015) readings. Also note that the definition of a mental disorder includes a set of caveats and recommendations to help find the boundary between normal distress and a mental disorder.
Then consider the following case:
Ms. Evans, age 27, was awaiting honorable discharge from her service in Iraq with the U.S. Navy when her colleagues noticed that she looked increasingly fearful and was talking about hearing voices telling her that the world was going to be destroyed in 2020. With Ms. Evans’s permission, the evaluating [social worker] interviewed one of her closest colleagues, who indicated that Ms. Evans has not been taking good care of herself for several months. Ms. Evans said she was depressed.
The [social worker] also learned that Ms. Evans’s performance of her military job duties had declined during this time and that her commanding officer had recommended to Ms. Evans that she be evaluated by a psychiatrist approximately 2 weeks earlier, for possible depression.
On interview, Ms. Evans endorsed believing the world was going to end soon and indicated that several times she has heard an audible voice that repeats this information. She has a maternal uncle with schizophrenia, and her mother has a diagnosis of bipolar I disorder. Ms. Evans’s toxicology screen is positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The evaluating [social worker] informs Ms. Evans that she is making a tentative diagnosis of schizophrenia.
