2.1 "Tight Shales - Not all Shales are Created Equal" - Sidney Green [EN]Pomcert
This document summarizes a conference on tight shales held in Warsaw, Poland in March 2011. It discusses how tight shales are not all the same and differ in their reservoir quality. Methods for characterizing and analyzing shale such as micro-structure observations, core analysis, well logs, and hydraulic fracturing are presented. The heterogeneity and natural fractures within shales are shown to create complex hydraulic fractures. Different conceptual fracture models are evaluated using reservoir simulation to demonstrate how fracture geometry impacts production outcomes. While knowledge is advancing, the document concludes that understanding the rock properties remains important for improving shale reservoir performance and lowering technical risk.
This document discusses the deterioration of relations between Israel and Turkey over the past decade. It was once a strategic partnership central to US policy in the Eastern Mediterranean, but Turkey has increasingly embraced Islamism under Erdogan. Relations cracked following a 2010 incident where Israeli commandos boarded a Turkish ship attempting to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, killing nine Turkish activists. Erdogan demanded apologies and changes to Israeli policy that have not occurred. Turkey has since aligned more with Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood while criticizing Israel. Regional dynamics are shifting as energy discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean could lessen European reliance on Russia if developed stably.
This document discusses the natural gas potential in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in the Greek exclusive economic zone. It notes that significant natural gas deposits have been discovered offshore Israel and Egypt, and that similar geological structures likely extend into Greek waters. The document estimates that undiscovered natural gas reserves in the total Levantine Basin could be over 3 trillion cubic meters. It argues that Greece should further explore and assess the hydrocarbon potential in its offshore areas, as substantial deposits there could help alleviate expected shortfalls in EU natural gas supply by 2020.
This document discusses new techniques for reducing exploration risk in challenging subsurface environments like deep water and beneath salt or basalt. It describes how 3D seismic surveys have improved drilling success rates from 25% to 50% but success is still low in some areas like 10% in deep Gulf of Mexico wells. New methods of acquiring seismic data from multiple azimuths and with vertically aligned sources and receivers are providing higher quality images to further reduce risk by illuminating subsurface targets from more directions. Examples from various basins demonstrate how these improvements in seismic technology decrease the chance of drilling dry holes.

This document summarizes the state of the global oil market in early 2016, when oil prices had collapsed to their lowest levels in over a decade. It finds that despite low prices, oil production continues to grow due to ongoing investments. Major producing countries like Canada, Iran, Iraq, and others are still bringing new production capacity online or restoring existing fields. The only possibilities for a substantial price recovery seem to be unexpected geopolitical events disrupting supply or a formal agreement by producers like OPEC to cut output, though such an agreement would be difficult to implement. Overall, supply appears set to continue outpacing demand in 2016, keeping downward pressure on prices.
