On May 15, 2013, twenty villages in the Makalondi region of Niger publicly committed to abandon harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and early marriage, with attendance from government officials and UNICEF representatives. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to promote women's and children's rights, is supported by the Comité Nigérien sur les Pratiques Traditionnelles (CONIPRAT) and aims to foster social change. The first lady, Malika Issoufou, emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to ban such practices and enhance protections for women and children in Niger.
