James K. Polk was the 11th President of the United States, serving from 1845 to 1849 as a Democrat. He is believed to have won the presidency by promising to annex Texas. During his presidency, Polk oversaw the United States' expansion with the annexation of Texas and Oregon Territory and victory in the Mexican-American War which added vast new territories in the West and Southwest.
