Geoscience at Chemeketa Community College
• Department:
• Geology is in Physical Sciences Department
• Faculty:
• Geology has 4 tenured and currently 5 adjunct faculty (though adjunct number ranges between 4 and
12).
• Adjuncts mainly teach GEO 140 series and not GS classes
• Students:
• Almost all students are seeking distribution/gen-ed requirements
• Most student working toward and AAOT (Oregon Transfer degree)
• Students who want to major in geoscience transfer to Western Oregon University (Earth Science Degree)
and Oregon State University (varying geoscience degrees)
• Courses:
• All courses are 4-credit science courses with a lab. GEO courses tend to be more rigorous than GS
courses
• Geology has many different courses offered at least once a year at all campuses. GS classes are more
rare, depends on the campus and center, mainly GS 106 is offered.

What I learned and what I will do / plan to do
• There is a clear connection between failure rate and delivery method. Between face-to-face and hybrid, pass rates
drop 10% overall, and between hybrid and online delivery, pass rate drop another 10% overall.
• I will work with all of my colleagues to make sure the delivery of content is easily accessible and course
requirements are thoroughly presented to students.
• I will work with my colleagues to tailor online curriculum to be more engaging for students
• I will work with colleagues and administration to find solutions to deal with students who disengage in these
classes midway through the term
• At YVC there is a clear under representation of certain minority groups in the geosciences, specifically Asian and
African American students
• I will attempt more outreach to underrepresented students by meeting with student groups on campus to
generate interest in classes
• I will reach out to advisers on campus to share specifics about the content of my classes to generate interest
• I will formulate activities and strategies that better address student needs within these underrepresented groups
• Repeat students are very common in my classes; however, many of these students are at risk of failure in my class
each term due to low test scores and lack of participation on research projects outside class.
• I will look into ways of increasing student success on tests, like test wrappers and setting aside more time prior to
tests for formal review sessions
• I will look for better ways of supporting students outside of class to increase participation on class projects
