Using Technology to Embed Enterprise in Learning and TeachingGary Wood
A short presentation considering how technology in learning and teaching can facilitate embedding enterprise and enterprise skills into university curricula.
Google Apps in Teaching: A Case Study All About LinguisticsGary Wood
A presentation from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University Google Apps for Learning and Teaching workshop, 2014.
This talk presents a case study of a first year undergraduate module, Introduction to Linguistics, in which students created a website to promote linguistics to prospective students. It consider how this was made possible through the use of a range of Google tools, including Google Sites to build the website itself and to promote collaboration between groups. The presentation shows how using Google Hangouts helped to solve the perennial problem of students complaining that it is impossible to coordinate everyone’s timetables to get together outside class; looks at how students used Google Docs to create materials; shows how Google Forms were used to manage the website’s launch event and student evaluation; and demonstrates how features of Google Calendar streamlined the scheduling of consultation sessions. The shows the potential these Google tools hold for innovation in learning and teaching, and how they can increase students intrinsic motivation through by facilitating an authentic learning experience and ownership of learning.
Twitter is widely used by undergraduate students, and this presentation offers a case study of its adoption to support students on three undergraduate modules. It considers the use of Twitter in-class to facilitate discussion, feedback and collaboration, particularly in large-group teaching, where discussion can be difficult to initiate and make inclusive. It also shows how Twitter provides great opportunities to extend traditional classroom boundaries, considering two ways in which this is so. First, it offers a replacement to email communication that promotes more collaborative, dialogue-based interaction, closer to that which occurs within the face-to-face classroom environment. Second, in so doing, it provides enhanced opportunities for continuous student feedback and intervention-based support. In short, we will see how Twitter encourages student engagement within and between classes, promoting students’ self-led, peer-supported learning.

Involve me and I'll understand: engaging students in research-led teachingGary Wood
A presentation from the University of Sheffield's Sixth Annual Learning and Teaching Conference, 2012.
Research-led teaching can easily become research-informed teaching, where students hear about research in traditional lectures but do not engage with it, leading to a focus on research findings rather than the research process.
This presentation shows how using a practical activity in a lecture setting engaged students in learning about published research and helped to achieve three aims: (1) introducing a research paper for study in later classes; (2) demonstrating research designs in practice; and (3) helping students approach reading a journal article for the first time.
The workshop involved delegates taking part in the activity as it has been used with students, and participants heard about the effects of employing this approach, from the lecturer and students’ perspectives. Delegates discussed how the method might be used and adapted for use in their own teaching, and what benefits this might bring for the lecturer and their students.

SYNERGY Induction to Pedagogy Programme - Training of Peers (ENGLISH)Sarah Land
The SYNERGY Induction to Pedagogy programme was created by project partners, with the aim of helping micro-enterprise owners using the SYNERGY Exchange platform, to engage in peer-to-peer learning opportunities. This training programme comprises six modules and is delivered over 5 hours through a series of video lectures and PowerPoints which have been written, developed and recorded by project partners.
These modules provide micro-enterprise owners with a sound understanding of the basics in relation to e-didactics, quality criteria of peer-learning, evaluation of online learning resources and online learning environments, producing quality learning resources for peers and other knowledge that has helped them to become competent and confident online peer-educators. This module is entitled ‘Training of Peers’ and provides content which provides an introduction to the characteristics of peer educators, instructional design theory and some common models used, and a brief overview of adult learning styles.
These slides are available in English, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian and Romanian.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
