Socialising

The boys at the darts Club Xmas do circa 1967. The good old Kiwi style of socialising
with a cold beer and good mates. All the three in the shot were members of the
Morrinsville Wheelers cycling club, the pool club and the darts club. This occupation
would have to come under the umbrella of leisure activities.
Cycling

This was Guy Fawkes day 1968. The fireworks are about to start. The
beginning of the Dulux Six Day Classic Auckland to Wellington road
race. As an occupation I can think of easier ones. I can only classify
this occupation as ‘Productivity,’ for it is neither an ADL nor with any
stretch of the imagination can it be called a Leisure activity.
Environmental Activist 1984

During the battle to protect Mt Nardi from the loggers, I was arrested
and charged with ‘trespassing.’ Sometimes you have to put life and
limb on the line to get a satisfactory outcome. I would have to call this
occupation ‘Civil Disobedience,’ as you can see one can be carried
 away by the outcomes.
Set Builder

Well the work is all over . We all celebrate with a cold beer or five. The giant set
for the opera Aida has at last been finished and for many of us our time with the
company was over. A number of us went from here to the West Sydney set of
Bartertown to work as extras on Mad Max 3.. The productive part of the
occupation is over now it’s time for ‘leisure activity.’
Film Extra

This job followed on from working as a set builder. I would classify
this as productivity, even though a lot of time was spent between
shots waiting for another scene to be set up for filming.
Actor 1991

The Roman Centurion Marcus in “A Different road to Bethlehem”
1990. A musical presentation put on by Auckland Elim church.
Productivity again.
Busking with my son in Taupo 1993

This is the occupation known as ‘busking.’ I supplemented my income as
a Woodwork Instructor by playing on the streets. This shot was taken by
my wife in Taupo. We were on our way to the Hastings Buskers Festival.
This activity/occupation I would classify as two, productivity, (earning
money) and leisure activity, (enjoying the day, relationship, songs.)
Construction

This occupation would definitely be classified as ‘productivity.’ Here my son and I are
depicted against the Tasmanian sky fitting roof trusses together. This was a rural property
my wife and I bought to ‘do up.’ When there is not much happening in the job market,
you have to find ways to make a living. Using the skills I learned as a Carpenter I acquired
rural properties cheaply and renovated them while living in them. After enjoying the
‘fruits of our labour,’ we then would find another doer upper, and start the process again.
That house in the picture was thankfully the last in a long line.
Grandfather 2012

This is more relaxed. Reading a story to a little one. This is more a role than an
occupation, could be referred to as ‘child care,’ there are however elements of
education in the mix as well. Again the image depicts productivity, education, child
care, and leisure.
Occupational Therapist

• This is the goal towards which I am working. I entered Occupational Therapy because of
my desire to extend my ‘use by date’ for helping people. I am interested in the field of
mental health, which includes dementia, and intellectual disabilities. Recently I have been
told about ‘reminiscence therapy’ which could be good. I have a love of history,
particularly pictorial, which is evident in this power point presentation. Reminiscence
therapy I believe could hold a key to people being able to engage their past, make links
and feel good about themselves. Occupational therapy pulls together all the elements of
productivity, leisure and activities of daily living and gives them relevance.

Editor's Notes

  1. The boys at the darts Club Xmas do circa 1967. The good old Kiwi style of socialising with a cold beer and good mates. All the three in the shot were members of the Morrinsville Wheelers cycling club, the pool club and the darts club. This occupation would have to come under the umbrella of leisure activities.
  2. This was Guy Fawkes day 1968. The fireworks are about to start. The beginning of the Dulux Six Day Classic Auckland to Wellington road race. As an occupation I can think of easier ones. I can only classify this occupation as ‘Productivity,’ for it is neither an ADL nor with any stretch of the imagination can it be called a Leisure activity. Productive because there were prizes to be won, mountains to climb, and perhaps a small amount of fame if one was to attain a ‘podium finish.’
  3. During the battle to protect Mt Nardi from the loggers, I was arrested and charged with ‘trespassing.’ An interesting interpretation of the law. It was not private land, and we, the activists, had just as much right to be there as the logging company did. We won the battle and Mt Nardi was declared a World Heritage site. Sometimes you have to put life and limb on the line to get a satisfactory outcome. I would have to call this occupation ‘Civil Disobedience,’ as you can see one can be carried away by the outcomes.
  4. Well the work is all over . We all celebrate with a cold beer or five. The giant set for the opera Aida has at last been finished and for many of us our time with the company was over. A number of us went from here to the West Sydney set of Bartertown to work as extras on Mad Max 3.. The productive part of the occupation is over now it’s time for ‘leisure activity.’
  5. This job followed on from working as a set builder. The big guy scratching his ear was an Argentinian professional wrestler the guy with the metal hat a blacksmith, and the other guy on the right was a bloke I met in the pub…Again this would be classified as productivity, although a fair amount of time was spent between shooting with just standing around waiting for another scene to be set up for shooting.
  6. The Roman Centurion Marcus in “A Different road to Bethlehem” 1990. Even though I was now a ‘new creature’ as the Bible puts it I was still given the roles of ‘baddies.’ A bit of stereotyping. Productivity again.
  7. This is the occupation known as ‘busking.’ In the USA it’s called ‘panhandling’ or ‘begging.’ I supplemented my income as a Woodwork Instructor by playing on the streets. This shot was taken by my wife in Taupo. We were on our way to the Hastings Buskers Festival. A few minutes after this photo was taken a woman approached me and asked how much I would charge to play in her pub that night. I negotiated for a bed and breakfast for myself and the family. We did the same deal on our way back to Auckland…This activity/occupation I would classify as two, productivity, (earning money) and leisure activity, (enjoying the day, relationship, songs.)
  8. This occupation would definitely be classified as ‘productivity.’ Here my son and I are depicted against the Tasmanian sky fitting roof trusses together. After enjoying the ‘fruits of our labour,’ we then would find another doer upper, and start the process again. That house in the picture was thankfully the last in a long line.
  9. This is more relaxed. Reading a story to my step-daughter’s wee girl. Her name is Ayawa which is an African name, her Dad comes from Togo on the Ivory Coast. This is more a role than an occupation, however Ayawa’s Mum was grateful for the respite she received in order to help Nancy in the kitchen. This occupation could be referred to as ‘child care,’ there are however elements of education in the mix as well. Again the image depicts productivity, education, child care, and leisure.
  10. This is the goal towards which I am working. I entered Occupational Therapy because of my desire to extend my ‘use by date’ for helping people.
