- There are few places on the planet that offer the total tranquility and unspoiled natural beauty of Maria Island. Maria Island is a very special place – no traffic, no phones, no shops, no stress. The four day walk is a perfect short break to take a ‘Device Detox’, to rejuvenate and recharge while enjoying the best of Tasmania. The breathtaking beauty, spectacular wildlife and friendly service make for a world class experience.CHANGE SLIDE
- The island is a National Park and sanctuary for some of the world’s rarest wildlife including the endangered Tasmanian Devil. The Tasmanian Devil has been fighting a deadly cancer that has put the species at risk. The programme to introduce healthy Devils to Maria Island has been very successful. The aptly named ‘devil’ has been know to knick the boots of one of our guests while in our overnight camps! We now have special ‘devil proof’ hooks for hanging boots overnight. CHANGE SLIDE
- Our client’s will travel In small groups of just ten guests and two expert guides. The activity level each day would be rated easy to moderate walking. A general good level of fitness, and no existing health issues will allow our client’s to optimize their walking tour experience. CHANGE SLIDE
- Then each night relax and enjoy delicious candlelit dining provided by the guides.Yes, the guides are not only experts in the history, horticulture, wildlife of the island, but each has been expertly trained to prepare gourmet meals to the exacting standards that have won The Maria Island Walk critical acclaim. Of course, at the end of a long day of walking, you will also be treated to your beverage of choice and the finest Tasmanian wines. - On DAY 1 ; The Maria Island Home Team will collect our guests from wherever they are staying in Hobart.Back at our city base office, our guests meet the rest of the group, and be given backpacks and gear that is provided complimentary. If luggage storage is needed, a modest amount can be accommodated at our base office. Guests are given a briefing to explain all there is to know about their next 4 days in paradise. CHANGE SLIDE
- Then it’s a drive of just over an hour to the fishing village of Tria BOONA where they will board the Maria Island boat for the 40 minute crossing. After a delicious lunch and a short walk to CAS A OO RINA Beach camp, there is time for an afternoon stroll through the eucalypt forest and visit a penguin colony at Haunted Bay.That evening, after a candlelit dinner, guests can stroll along the beach with a glass of wine delighting in the day they have had and excited by what lies ahead. On Day one, the total walking distance that would be covered is approximately 8Km or 5 Miles. CHANGE SLIDE
- Ian and Bronwyn Johnstone established the walk in 2002 as a family businessproviding high quality, authentic, local tourism. Our staff and our guests are a valued part of the family business and share the passion for responsible, sustainable and ethical tourism.We work closely with the Parks & Wildlife Service and Birds Australia in conservation projects and we play a leadership role in helping our local tourism industry and community.The camps are environmentally sensitive so no showers are available, but most guests enjoy a dip in the beautiful clear waters near the camps. A private composting toilet is available at each camp and a private washroom to freshen up. The final night is in historic Bernacchi House and guests enjoy private facilities with hot showers and fresh linen in a traditional setting.CHANGE SLIDE.
- The morning of Day 2 you will Wake up to the busy chattering of the wattle birds and,from the comfort of your bed, watch the morning sun sparkle through the forest.CHANGE SLIDE
- After a morning dip and delicious breakfast, it’s time to start your journey along five beautiful beaches. Watch for dolphins in the surf and sea eagles soaring overhead as we walk to White Gums camp.You may also find a prize catch along the route!CHANGE SLIDE

- We arrive by late afternoon for a refreshing swim and then after the perfect day, you can relax, before enjoying another gourmet feast with fine Tasmanian food and wine.Total distance covered on day 2 is 13Km or 8 Miles over flat grounds and firm sandy beaches.Can it get any better than this? - Today we will head inland to the heart of the island anddiscover the rich greens of the grand forests. CHANGE SLIDE
- Wander through the planet’s largest stands of giantTasmanian blue gums orclimb through rare ‘cloud’ rainforests to the summits of Mt MA RIE AH or Bishop and Clerk .CHANGE SLIDE
- For the more adventurous, the 711m or 2,300 ft. summit of Mt MAH RYE AH calls, delivering absolutely breathtaking 360° views. Alternatively, a hike up Bishop and Clerk is another rewarding option.CHANGE SLIDE
- That evening,arrive at the enchanting World Heritage settlement of Darlington.CHANGE SLIDE
- Where on the final night, our guests stay at the elegant Bernacchi House enjoying hot showers, and sipping cocktails in the historic parlour. fine wine, Tasmania’s best cheese selection, and wonderful conversation.CHANGE SLIDE
- Another day that’s given you plenty to dream about. Approx. walking distance 9 km, 5mi or around 17km or 10.5mi if one of the peak walks is taken.CHANGE SLIDE
- The final day begins with a delicious breakfast followedby a walk around Darlington. The walking on this day is on firm foot paths, covering a total distance of 4 KM or 2.5 miles. CHANGE SLIDE
- Experience Darlington’s rich history - the convict years, the industrial era and the fascinating farming history.Then head off to see the Fossil Cliffs – a short circuit walk through varied woodlands, home to spectacular wildlife.CHANGE SLIDE
