This document summarizes a study that examined the impact of a financial education intervention on savings behavior among low-income clients of a branchless banking system in India. The study used a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact. Key findings include: 1) Households that received financial education training increased their total savings by about $28 (29% more than the control group) including increased savings in other banks. 2) The intervention successfully improved financial attitudes and commitment to savings but did not increase financial literacy. 3) The financial education was found to be cost-effective in increasing savings among this low-income population.
