Choosing a fabric is one of the most crucial decisions you
will need to make, whether you are buying new furniture
or reupholstering an old favorite.
Color and pattern are important, but even before you
get there, you need to choose the proper fabric type for
your furniture and your lifestyle.
When developing sustainable fabrics, which are
frequently made from natural or recycled materials, the
manufacturing procedure, the qualities of the fibers, and
the total impact on the environment are all considered.
These materials can aid in soil regeneration, water
saving, reduced carbon emissions, and waste
management.

4. Compared to regular cotton, organic cotton is far
more environmentally friendly. because it is grown
without the use of chemicals or other synthetic
chemicals. While extremely strong and delicate, cotton
may easily wrinkle and get soiled. Upholstery fabric
that is 100 percent cotton is uncommon; most of the
time, a blend is used.Recycled cotton is an even more
environmentally friendly choice if you want to take
things a step further.

Depending on the manufacturing method, wool can be
a sustainable material. It can be a touch scratchy, hard
to clean, and sensitive to felting. Therefore, most wool
upholstery fabric is a blend.Wool and wool mixes are
strong and long-lasting, and they resist soil, fading,
pilling, and wrinkling well. To make wool simpler to
clean and to lessen the chance that the strands may
feel, or get linked together until they resemble felt,
wool is typically combined with a synthetic fiber.

Hemp Fabric is one of the most eco-friendly
natural fabrics around. It’s high-yielding, not water
or chemical intensive, and restores soil nutrients
and cleans impurities like heavy metals and other
toxins. It’s considered a carbon negative raw
material. It actually absorbs CO2 from the
atmosphere, more so than your average plant.
hemp tends to be slightly more expensive than
other sustainable organic fabrics, though we can
expect to see more of it in the future.

Which is made of flax, a very durable natural material
from plants. It has a smooth, lustrous finish that comes
naturally. Although it can wrinkle quickly, linen is highly
resistant to pilling and soiling, finding it more appropriate
for casual upholstered furniture than formal ones. It is
commonly used with cotton to promote elasticity.
Organic linen provides many of the same benefits as
cotton due to flax’s long history of growth, minimum care
requirements, and natural decomposition. It is also
delicate, light, strong, and naturally moth-resistant.
Every part of the plant, even the very little waste it
produces, can be used to make linen fabric. Although the
production process generates some pollutants and
consumes a lot of mechanical energy, the fabric remains
one of the most environmentally safe available materials.

Cork is sustainably harvested from a cork oak (yes, it’s
from a tree) by simply shaving away the bark. Flexible,
colourful and completely vegan, cork fabric is an eco-
friendly sustainable alternative to leather and other
commonly used fabrics.
Harnessing the unique properties of cork, cork fabric -
or cork leather as it’s sometimes known - retains the
natural beauty and tactile quality of raw cork while
providing a durable surface suitable for both domestic
and commercial applications.

Tencel is a sustainable upholstery fabric that is made
from the fibers of eucalyptus trees. Tencel is a natural,
manmade, biodegradable fiber which made from wood
pulp. It is known for its softness, durability, and
moisture-wicking properties. Tencel production
requires less water and energy than conventional
cotton and can be produced in a closed-loop system
that minimizes waste.

Riona Bamboo is a woven linen multipurpose fabric.
This Light Greenish Beige colored fabric is made in a
100% linen construction and brings a touch of
elegance to any environment. The subtle slub yarns
give this a great visual texture as only a linen can. The
soft, drapable hand has to be felt to be truly
appreciated. Riona is suitable for drapery, curtains,
headboards, cornice boards, pillows, bedding and
furniture upholstery fabric.

Polyester that has been converted into fibers from
recycled plastic water bottles is known as recycled PET
(Recycled Polyester). The fabric is recycled and saves
plastic from ending up in landfills. When a textile product
cannot be produced entirely of natural fabrics, we
consider looking for recycled polyester instead of virgin
polyester because it produces fewer carbon emissions
during manufacture and is less damaging overall.
Recycled polyester is more prevalent in today’s furniture
upholstery.Recycled polyester fabrics aren't the most
sustainable fibers but their environmental impacts are
much lower than virgin polyester made from oil.

Viscose is frequently promoted as a more eco-friendly
substitute for cotton or polyester. This cellulose-
based fabric was created as a replacement for silk,
linen and cotton because it is less expensive and more
strong. Although resilient, it is prone to wrinkling. It is
frequently combined with various kinds of threads to
produce a hybrid material suitable for upholstery.
Viscose is regarded as one of the greatest options for
upholstery materials because of its absorbency,
comfort, and affordability. Based on these qualities,
viscose fabric is frequently used in upholstery, to give
the fabric and furniture greater gloss and durability.

It is a new product that uses spent coffee beans as
part of the manufacturing process which produces a
final product that only comes in one coffee coloured
material. Although this is a vinyl which is inherently
highly processed the makers claim that the fabric is
phthalate free, vegan and sustainable. From a practical
point of view it has a good rub score achieving
100,000 martindale rubs and is breathable and easy
to clean.
