2. Our Mission
is to research and design a jetty for the town of Soufriere that will serve
primarily as an emergency evacuation route, but also as a fishing dock, and a
community center with shops for the people of Soufriere
3. Why the Pier is Essential
1.Emergency evacuation
2.Fishing dock and preservation
3.Community center
4.Shopping and market
4. Marine Reserves
Two marine reserves to consider:
1. Cabrits Marine Reserve
2. The Soufriere Scott’s Head Marine
Reserve
Development is permitted in these zones:
● If it will not negatively impact the marine reserve’s ecological function;
● If it is compatible with the principles of coastal zone management
● If it is compatible with Dominica’s “Nature Island” identity
6. Tourist Destinations
• Champagne Reef, 4.8 km from Soufriere
• Sulphur Springs, in Soufriere
• Waitukubuli Historical Trail, 3.5 km from Soufriere
• Scotts Head, 3.5 km from Soufriere
9. Potential Design
1.Underwater section of the pier constructed with concrete
2.Above water section of the pier constructed with wood
Benefits:
1.Maintains the strength of concrete
2.Smaller weight and cost of wood
3.Utilize local resources
10. 1. Prioritize uses
2. Compare costs and benefits of various materials
3. Suppliers, location, and other logistics
Completed Tasks
11. Looking Forward
1. Determine tourism figures
2. Research possible ship routes in Soufriere Bay
3. Finalize location of pier with community
