is a group of words that begins with a
preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun,
which is called the object of the preposition. The
prepositional phrase functions as an adverb or
an adjective within a sentence, providing
additional information about the subject, verb,
or object.

A prepositional phrase
consists of two main
components:
A preposition is a word that
shows the relationship
between its object and
another word in the
sentence. Some common
prepositions include: in,
on,at, under, behind,
beside."
The object of the preposition is
a noun or a pronoun that
comes after the preposition
and completes the relationship
expressed by the preposition.
Example:
On the table: The preposition
"on" shows the relationship
between the object "table" and
another word in the sentence.
"Table" is the object of the
preposition.
Prepositional Phrase as an Adjective
EXAMPLES
The dog in the
backyard is barking
loudly. In this
sentence, the
prepositional phrase
"in the backyard"
modifies the noun
"dog" by providing
information about
its location. It tells
us which dog is
barking.
• The boy in the
white t-shirt is
my cousin.
• The boy with the
tall woman is her
son.
• Sheila is the
runner with the
fastest time.
Prepositional Phrase as an Adverb
EXAMPLES
She ran with
determination
towards the finish
line. In this
sentence, the
prepositional phrase
"with determination"
modifies the verb
"ran" by providing
information about
how she ran. It tells
us the manner in
which she ran.

• This course
is the most
difficult in
the state.
Find a pair to create 5 sentences each
using the examples mentioned in the
discussion. Students will collaborate using
their sentences with and practice
identifying prepositional phrases and
categorizing them into Adverbial phrases
and Adjectival phrases, fostering
collaboration and active learning. The
teacher will call a pair to share their works
and how they identify and categorize them.
APPLICATION
The students will write a personal
narrative story about a failure or
setback that taught them an
important lesson and contributed
to their growth with the
application of prepositional
phrases.
