Preparing For Disaster Checklist
Sadly as we all know disaster can happen in any place and at any time. The reality is
there is little or nothing that we can do about that. However, what you can do is to
understand how to keep yourself and your family safe when a disaster does strike.
There are basically generally two types of disasters: natural disasters, and man-made
disasters.
Natural Disasters
Some examples include:
 Hurricanes
 Floods
 Typhoons
 Earthquakes
 Floods
 Tsunamis
 Volcanic eruptions
Man Made Disasters
Some examples include:
 Wars
 Terrorist attacks
 Biological attacks
 Hazardous materials accidents
Preparing for Disaster Checklist
Prepare In Advance
Supply Kits - You need to put together a supply kit for all of your family. These
should include:
 Water – As a minimum one gallon of water for each family member
 Torches - flashlights or rechargeable LED lamps (battery or solar powered)
 Non-perishable food items
 Sleeping bags, blankets
 Set aside some cash for emergencies (Not debit or credit cards)
 Prescription medicines and drugs that the family need (inhalers etc)
Radio – You will need to keep yourself aware of public announcements, police
information etc. Get yourself a battery or solar powered radio to do the job.
Remember power sources could well be down. Do not rely on anything powered by
electricity only.

Local Maps – There is a strong chance that you may have to drive to a safe location
during a disaster. Always make sure that the highways and roads, and all of the other
areas that you will be passing through, are safe before proceeding. Listen for updates
on the radio and try to avoid over crowding.
Never attempt to drive through a flooded area. If you really have to do it, try to
measure just how deep the flood is first. If the depth is less than six inches (30cm) in
height, that is safe, so drive through it. Anything over this can be danegrous so always
check. You do not want water getting near the engine.
Weather Conditions - In the unlikely event that there is a man-made disaster where
chemicals or sprays may be involved try to get to a location that is up-wind.
Chemical and biological agents can quickly travel through the atmosphere, so it is
best to steer clear of the area until the authorities have announced it is safe. If a
member of your family has come into contact with either hazardous waste or any
biological agent, go to any hospital’s emergency unit. Always get checked out.
