India gained independence on August 15, 1947 but did not have an official constitution. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution came into effect, establishing India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 to honor the day India became a republic. It marks the completion of India's transition from a dominion of British India to an independent republic.
