Environmental Impact Assessment
EIA
An environmental impact assessment EIA) is an assessment of the
possible positive or negative impact that a proposed project may
have on the environment, considering natural, social and economic
aspect.
According to The International Association of Impact
Assessment (IAIA)
EIA is the process of identifying, predicting, evaluating the
biophysical, social and other relevant effects of development
proposals prior to major decisions being taken and commitments
made.
• New projects are called ‘green field projects’ where
no development has been done.
• Projects that already exist but require expansion
must also apply for clearance. These are called
‘brown field projects’.
