Editor's Notes

  • #5 So last time we learned about the impact of predicting to our life as a student. We gave our prediction using a visual illustration and we learned that prediction is an important strategy for us to connect with the text we are reading right? For today’s lesson let us take our trip? Are you all excited?   So, just seat back and relax as we first… Check our wheels and brake before travelling and reaching our destination, so let’s go!
  • #6 Who are they? Do you know them?   I will call two representatives from this class, one girl and one boy to read a simple conversation about them. Read the lines with emotion.
  • #9 Process Questions: Imagine you overheard the conversation between the two.   Which statement is more convincing? Princess or Christian? I think the statement of Christian is more convincing because her source is from a news which is a credible source. (Answers may vary). 2. What are the things you considered in making your choice? Okay very good, I’m glad that you have a background knowledge in assessing one’s ideas because this will lead us to our key. Now… let us take the key!
  • #10 At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: judge the relevance of the truthfulness of the ideas presented to; gather information to improve skill in spotting factual ideas; show respect on one’s assessment of ideas.
  • #11 Now let us fill the Engine! As we try to gather information from various sources of platforms to keep us updated, our capability to judge the truthfulness and relevance of ideas is imperative. We must remember that before we believe the articles or materials we have obtained; we should check first if it is factual or misleading. Thus, we must know the different tips on how to spot factual or truthful information from a faulty one. So, let’s define first our two key points. RELEVANCE- (please read the definition) is how appropriate something to what being said at a given time For ex. When we are looking for a job online, or when we find tips in business, we go to business sites like allbusiness.com, so we see that all the contents in that site is relevant to its purpose. TRUTH- (please read the definition) is something that has been proven by facts or sincerity. For example, when we give our real name, age, or date of birth or when we present results of survey or when we do an experiments in our science subject. We are proving a things to make it a truth
  • #12 Now class, let us see the tips on how to spot reliable information on the board. While I play the music, you will pass the ball around the class and when the music stops, the student with the ball must choose one description from each side and place it beside its corresponding tips in front. Is that clear? CONSIDER THE SOURCE- Investigate the site you are viewing or reading. What are the examples of reliable sites that we should use? For instance, in science, if we are looking for science news, we go to sciencenews.org. What headlines can we see there? “A pigment’s shift in chemistry robbed a painted yellow rose of its brilliance”   Do you think this headline is relevant in that site?   READ BEYOND- Headlines can be outrageous to get clicks, so you should focus on the whole story. You must read and look for details such as statistics, date, name, and others. Specially nowadays, there a lot of click baits headline. Clickbait is web content where the goal is to have the reader view not necessarily the content, but advertisements and offers. Another example is if you are ordering online. Sometimes there are products who are very cheap for its ideal price, so don’t just look for its price right? we read beyond its reviews, the comments of the previous buyers or the photo proof of purchase. So that is reading beyond.   CHECK THE AUTHOR- Do a quick search on the author to find out if they are real and credible. For example, if we are looking for an article that talks about technology or politics. We should also know the author if he really has the credentials to talk about science and technology or politics.   Another common example is when we are watching health related videos, it is important to know the one who is giving you advice specially in health. Know if he/she really is a health expert or a doctor because of we did not check the author, it may bring us harm. VERIFY SUPPORTING SOURCES- Determne if the given information supports the story. Always check its relevance and if the details really support the story that you read. Ex. in social science, you are arguing in a debate, you make sure that your supporting sources will back up your claim. You should consider the currency or Timeliness of the information, Relevance or importance of the information for your needs, authority or source of the information, the accuracy or Truthfulness and correctness of the information. and the purpose or reason the information exists.   CHECK THE DATE- Reposting old news stories do not mean they're relevant to current events. It should be updated. Always consider the most current information CHECK YOUR BIASES- Consider if your own beliefs could affect your judgment. Study the arguments of both sides and weigh the information if it affects your judgement from your previous belief. So, were able to learn the basic tips to spot a truthful information. Now, based on what we have discussed, what do you think is the impact of unconfirmed information spreading online? It may lead to misinformation or misinterpretation. It may cause action that it shouldn’t be done. Ok very good, so in a nutshell, what do you suggest to readers or listeners?  -Be vigilant to the information we read or listen to. We should learn to protect our self from fake news through being information literate.  Yes exactly! Ok I think we are now ready to test drive!
  • #13 Now that you already know the different tips on how to spot truthful information, let us verify your answers on the first activity. Let's do the fact check by accomplishing the table below. Put a check on the corresponding item if it was clearly provided by the speaker. The speaker who will get the most checks is therefore the one who stated truthful ideas.
  • #16 Who carries a truthful information? Christian ma’am Alright we have just confirmed that Christian carries the truthful information now let us spot the information provided by Christian, the speaker. Who can give me the source of Christian based on the conversation? PhilStar.com Very good! What about the supporting details?  According to the news, singer Moira Dela Torre has finally spoken up a couple of days after she and Jason Hernandez announced that they were ending their three-year marriage. The singer went on to admit that while indeed she did not have a perfect marriage, at no point did she cheat on Jason and that she stayed true to her vows. In the post that confirmed their break-up, Jason had said that he was unfaithful during their marriage. Moira said she wanted to end speculations regarding their split, rumors which she considered hurtful despite the couple no longer being together. In terms of Jayson’s sexuality, there is no reliable source yet that confirms his being a gay. Exactly! What about the author? Who is the author? Kristofer Purnell, a news writer The supporting sources? Moira and Jayson Date? June 4, 2022 So, class fact checking is very important for us to assess whether the information listened or presented to is factual of not.  In our next activity, let us have a game!
  • #17 Direction: Go to your assigned group (based on your skills in dancing, singing, acting, or performing). I have already assigned you to your group. See your group with the same color of your name tag. Listen carefully to the video clip and be ready to answer the given questions. Spot the source, details, author, supporting sources (if it is given) and date. Each group will choose one representative per question to answer. The one who will be first to click the buzzer will have a chance to answer and when they get the correct answer, it will add points to his or her corresponding group. 2 points each question. Whenever you’ll get a correct answer, you have a two badges for your group, the group with greatest number of badges will win the game!
  • #23 Alright! Very good class, let’s clap for yourselves and let’s clap for the winning groups.
  • #24 What is the importance of checking the legitimacy of information to you as a student? Checking the legitimacy of the information will keep us from being a victim of fake news or faulty information. As a receiver of information, why do we need to sharpen our skill in judging the relevance and worth of one's ideas? Because we may have to use it as biases of our personal decisions in some situations.
  • #25 3. What the things we consider again in evaluating the truthfulness of information? The source, supporting sources, author, date, details, and biases. 4. In your own belief, is it necessary class to give respect to one’s assessment of ideas? Why? Yes, ma’am because each of us has a freedom to express ourselves in any ways
  • #26 5. Ok, respect will never get out of the picture but what if other people’s assessment to information is wrong? What will you do? Will still respect it? I will still respect he, but I will educate him/her in a way that he/she will not get offended. 6. And then… how will you help him/her? I will teach him/her to do a fact checking in a constructive way.
  • #29 What is the importance of checking the legitimacy of information to you as a student? As a receiver of information, why do we need to sharpen our skill in judging the relevance and worth of one's ideas?
  • #31 What is the importance of checking the legitimacy of information to you as a student? As a receiver of information, why do we need to sharpen our skill in judging the relevance and worth of one's ideas?
  • #32 What is the importance of checking the legitimacy of information to you as a student? As a receiver of information, why do we need to sharpen our skill in judging the relevance and worth of one's ideas?
  • #34 So, class, through this activity, you were able to gather information, assess its truthfulness and present it effectively. I would like to commend everyone for a job well done!
