8. WOOD LAMP EXAMINATION
• Also known as “Black light” test. It involves using a
handheld device (wood lamp) that uses
transillumination (light) to detect skin infections
and skin irregularities.
• In a dark room, the light is held over a particular. If
there are any changes in the pigmentation of skin,
or the presence of bacterial / fungal infection, will
cause the affected area of the skin to change color
under the light.

11. • Sun protection – use broad
spectrum sunscreen every day and
reapply it every 2 hours.
Whenever possible, seek shade
and wear protective clothing.
• Avoid waxing: Waxing can worsen
melasma. Ask a dermatologist /
facial aesthetic surgeon about
laser hair removal.
12. • Avoid scented cosmetics / products that irritate
your skin.
• If oral contraceptives / birth control pills are the
reason, stop them.
13. MEDICAL TREATMENT
• Hydroquinone: Is applied to
the skin once daily and
works by lightening the skin.
It comes as a cream, lotion,
gel, or liquid.
• Tretinoin – It contains
retinoids , apply it on skin
once daily, usually during
bedtime.
14. • Corticosteroids – usually used in combination
products (Hydroquinone, Tretinoin, and a
Corticosteroid) available in 1 cream.
• Azelaic acid or Kojic acid – only prescribed by a
certified facial aesthetic surgeon /
dermatologist to help lighten melasma.
• Glycolic acid – it has skin lightening properties
and can directly reduce melanin pigments on
the skin.
