Sales on online channels grew in Swiss hospitality despite economic downturn in 2009
According our survey many Swiss hotels worked with Internet distribution systems (IDS) during the economic crises trying to gain new customers and to compensate for foreseen losses. This explains the increase of market shares of such platforms. Nevertheless direct booking channels of the hotels are still dominant sales’ forces.
A rough estimation of online sales in the Swiss hotel sector based on data from our survey results in an overall turnover of probably more than 800 Million CHF in 2009 and commission costs of some 80 Million CHF. IDS have significantly increased their market share, from 5.7% in 2008 to 10.6% in 2009. This is probably due to a more active online distribution sales strategy during the economic crises.
Direct booking channels as dominant sales forces
Despite the growth of the IDS, direct booking channels such as telephone, fax, walk-ins, e-mail, Web form on the own website are still dominant for Swiss hotels. The share of these direct bookings decreased between 2008 and 2009 from 75,4 percent to 71,1 percent. On average more than half of all bookings (52,7%) are mediated through electronic channels. 26% of hotels have an own real-time booking system with a direct link to the hotel software (PMS) on their website, but Swiss hotels realize on average only 4.4% of all sales through this channel. Booking.com, Hotel Reservation System (HRS), Switzerland Travel Centre (STC) and destination management systems of local destinations are the most frequently used IDS in the Swiss hospitality sector. On average a Swiss hotels uses 5 IDS channels.
Since 2003 the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland Valais (www.hevs.ch) in collaboration with the Swiss Hotel Association (www.hotelleriesuisse.ch) has conducted regularly surveys in order to monitor the evolution of sales in the different distribution channels. An online questionnaire was sent to over 2’300 members of hotelleriesuisse in January and March 2010 and resulted in 224 valid responses.

The National Programme for Control of Blindness was launched in 1976 with the goal of reducing blindness prevalence from 1.4% to 0.3% by 2020. Surveys showed blindness reduced from 1.1% in 2001-02 to 1% in 2006-07. The program provides non-recurring and recurring grants to NGOs for strengthening eye care services, including expanding units, developing eye banks and donation centers, and mobile ophthalmic units with telemedicine. Eligible NGOs must satisfy general criteria and have experience in eye care services. Infrastructure requirements vary depending on activities but generally include manpower, examination equipment, and operating facilities.

Labour migration does not appear to have the same magnitude and socio-economic importance in Belarus as in other EaP countries. It is one of the few post-socialist economies that have preserved the dominance of the state sector and built complicated systems of subsidisation and economic support for the population designed to manage the political-business cycle (see Chubrik, Shymanovich, Zaretsky (2012)). This model has allowed the economy to grow quite steadily until recently. However, the distorted system of incentives that was created for enterprises and households has resulted in the need for a “correction”, which happened in the form of a balance of payments crisis in 2011. The impact of this factor on migration has not been fully visible yet. At the same time the relatively long period of stability and gradual, but steady, increase in welfare payments has played a role as a migration-restraining factor. In order to estimate cost and benefits of labour migration between EU and Belarus, this study utilises publically available literature as background and relies where possible on micro-data: Census-2009, Household Budget Survey (HBS), as well as relevant official data and data from polls related to the topic. Additionally, some sections of this report rely on information collected in the course of a focus group meeting with labour migrants and a series of in-depth interviews with officials from state, international, and non-governmental agencies dealing with migration. Lastly, in some cases anecdotal evidence was collected to support some of the new trends that have not yet been recorded in the statistics.
