How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

They are protecting the evil spirit of Dai Shi that is contained in a special box. Currently before the temple closed, they had a trial to select three warrior guards to protect the evil spirit. The three original chosen were Lilly, Theo, and Jarrod. When Master Mao discovers that Jarrod is not the right person, he chooses the cub Casey instead. Jarrod being upset and all goes for revenge and interrupts the talk between Mao and the warriors. When this happens, Jarrod decides to attack and in the midst of all this, Dai Shi is released. Of the villains, there is Dai Shi who has overtaken Jarrod, Camille, and Flit. The evils except for the monsters, generals, and Dai Shi, return and go to the good side. Then every good person helps to fight the final battle between all the evils and Dai Shi. Their friends and family now get to have a happy ending as the battle ends.

10. Narrative Structure Episode 1 Part 1: Welcome to the Jungle 1. Multiple Protagonists: Lilly, Casey, and Theo. The Newest Power Rangers. 2. Exposition: The series begins at the Phai Zhug academy led by Master Mao. Phai Zhug is type of Kung Fu and "is the order of the claw" said by R.J. and others in the show. There are six finalists in which three earn the chance to protect the capture chest of the evil Dai Shi. The three finalists were originally Lilly, Theo, and Jarrod. After an incident with Casey a cub level student at the academy, Jarrod is removed from the choice to guard the concealment of Dai Shi. Editor Note: This is where I think I should stop before this becomes a summary instead of an exposition. 3. Motivation: To help protect the world from a new evil force called Dai Shi. To find a new master and have some type of power to help battle the monsters thrown at them. To save the world, learn about life, and more Phai Zhug. 4. Narrative Problematic: Who will be their new master? What will happen to Jarrod? Will Dai Shi take over the world? Can the Power Rangers win? Will Casey be able to morph and save Fran? Will we see Master Mao anymore?
11. Narrative Structure Part 2 5. Cause-effect chain: The description of the chain in application to this episode: Six finalists at the Phai Zhug academy battle to be the ones to guard the concealed powers of Dai Shi. Three finalists are chosen. One acts too bad and gets the boot from the selection. A cub gets chosen instead, and they are told of what their mission will be. Said rejected student Jarrod gets upset and tries to claim the guardian position from the cub; hence, the student releases Dai Shi and runs away while the three students remaining try to fight Dai Shi. Dai Shi kills the Master, takes over Jarrod, and the academy while evil folks of his group come back again. Lilly, Casey the cub level student, and Theo ultimately find their new master R.J. after one tough battle and discovering the place they were meant to go to. They are given morphers and outfits and all plus they are introduced to their new training, living, and working place at Jungle Karma Pizza. They go into the second battle where Casey can not morph directly like the others, and now he has to save a lady named Fran from the monster while unmorphed and held back by the minor evils of the monster and Dai Shi. 6. Climax: The climax in this episode is where they discover who their new Phai Zhug master is, and they have a chance to protect the world from Dai Shi's evil motives. A new beginning to a tragic loss of Master Mao and the release of the evil Dai Shi. 7. Resolution/ Non- Resolution: This episode ends at a cliff hanger because this was a merged showing of both parts for Episode One as a premiere of the series. It ends with the problem of a new master being solved, having new powers, and a new path to victory and life in general. There is still evil out there and the unanswered question of what Casey can do to save Fran and actually morph into a Power Ranger.
12. Episode Analysis Episode #32: Now The Final Fury Themes: Love, battle vs. evil, trust, hope, choosing ones path, and saving the world, return of dead for short time to help, and there might be some other themes I missed that are present in this episode. Summary: From the last part, Casey had gone to Dai Shi's temple to save Jarod from Dai Shi. Dai Shi is now free and beginning the completion of his army. Jarod and Camille are now free after having faced Dai Shi when they escaped with Casey. Present time: Jarod and Camille now have to decide if they want to help humanity in defeating Dai Shi. The rangers now have to face against anything Dai Shi throws at them including a ne Beast War and Dai Shi's army gets returned after the Spirit World portal is opened and certain Pai Zhug masters come back to help in the fight. The rangers and friends will have their happy endings and partings if they can defeat the evil. A relationship is brought together, two people are redeemed, and one leaves with a friend, and a fly will become human again. Characters: Rangers: Casey - Red Ranger, Theo Martin- Blue Ranger, Lily Chilman- Yellow Ranger, R.J. (Robert James)- Wolf Ranger, Dominick - Rhino Ranger, Master Phant- Elephant Ranger, Master Swoop- Bat Ranger, Master Finn- Shark Ranger Other Masters of Pai Zhug: Master Mao, Master Rilla, Master Lope, Master Guin and they all reside in the Spirit World as fallen comrades. Friends: Fran, Camille, Filt, and Jarod. Enemies: Dai Shi, Scorch, and the Rinshi.
13. Episode Analysis Part 2 Mise-en-scene Sets: Pai Zhug Temple: Outside Training Grounds and Room of Animal Spirits of Pai Zhug Jungle Karma Pizza: Restaurant, Kitchen, and Upstairs Living Area of JKP Battleground/Outside Scenes: Parking Lot/ Back side of buildings in the city. There are probably some sets built in studio for the episodes. They are also filmed on location and by chroma key screens for the zord control parts or so. The sets in the temple and all scenes look very realistic as to which keeps me guessing of what is filmed in studio. Lighting: This episode has all aspects of lighting. It also has the natural light sense of the outside world. There is some shadowing in the Spirit Room and in the scenes at JKP and the living area upstairs. Three point lighting is shown in the Jungle Karma Pizza area scenes. Cameras: There are close-ups present when the focus is on a person. Extreme long shots are used to show the whole temple on the hill. Long shots are the most frequently used which include clips of fighting, team shots, and for general recording of the scenes. Extreme close-ups shots are to show that person own emotion when needed, and that is shown when Camille talks to Jarrod. There are multiple camera angles used. Overhead and action shots are used by a moving camera and the other scenes use a portable camera or a still one with motion ability. Costumes: They are representations of their themes. Very vibrant in color and have a great aerodynamic design in terms of ranger outfits. Each person has their own individuality throughout the show.
14. Episode Scene Analysis Episode 16: Friends Don't Fade Away Video/Cinematography Focus: The scene I am choosing to start out with is past the Medium shot of the JKP upper front building. It is filmed to show where the living area is on the outside. R.J. is packing his things because he can't control his animal spirit. Fran comes upstairs to see what is going on. The focus goes to Fran and then to R.J. as they talk and the focus is on who is talking at the moment. After that, the focus goes onto R.J. and the Fran is focused upon as the last part of the scene. Why: To determine a focus point of a character and to establish what the director wants us to see. Framing: The types of framing used in this episode is close-ups, medium shots, and long shots. Why: To help get the maximum amount of information and to provide clues to what is going to or is happening at the moment. Special effects: The blueish glow from the box he has, and the battle scene flashback. The battle scene flashback has the yellow glowball of Dai Shi's attack which he is jumping down towards R.J. and the glow hits R.J. Then R.J. emits a purple glow that forms a wolf figure.
15. Episode Scene Analysis Part 2 Editing: The editing in this scene is somewhat simplistic with fade ins and fade outs. Sorry about the previous mix-up. The pace is in between slow and fast jump cut style. There is a smooth flow of the scenes in a storyline mode. The action cuts are not too choppy, and they don't use a lot of jump cut styles Sound: The sound in this scene ranges from loud to quiet. The sound effects are loud yet give a sense of the action going on. The talking and other motions are quiet and there is not much background music to contribute to the scene. There is only the pitch and the tone of the characters to really give a sense of what the sound contributes to the scene's motives. The dialogue is spoken very well and conveys most of the emotion.

18. Content Parents might be concerned about the way most problems are solved and the messages of violence and morals. Violence: There is violence yet it is not everything of the show. Violence being the fighting, and shooting of lasers and battling evil. The rangers tell you how to make friends and not to steal, how to learn, and gain great personalities. They also show that fighting is to be used for defense. There is action and drama as the characters do not just get along so well like in other shows.
