1. BELANUS EBURNIUS SHELL
HARDNESS, ELEMENTAL
COMPOSITION, AND ITS RELATION
TO ATOMIC DISORDER
THE GOAL of my project
was to relate micro
hardness of Eburnius
barnacle shell regions to
atomic disorder through
the presence of Mg and S.
THE METHOD for
my project consisted
of creating lines of
indents with the micro-
indenter on barnacle
samples preserved in
epoxy.
After creating the
indents, I would image
the indents on the
Light Microscope and
on the Scanning
Electron Microscope.
From the images I
measured the
diagonals of the
indents and used
this to determine the
hardness.
By using Electron
Diffraction Spectra I
was able to see the
elemental
composition at each
indent.

IN CONCLUSION the hardness relation goes
Base Plate > Operculum > Exo Skeleton
* In the table to
the right, the
relation of blue
shaded values
was shown to
be insignificant
with TTEST *
Past studies have shown differences is elemental
composition correlate to differences in atomic
order and may relate to hardness.
My own research in this area is still in progress.
