Migrants living with & affected by HIV
in the UK experience several challenges:
• Socio-economic issues
• Legal issues
How have we been responding?
• Developing strategic documents
• Undertaking partnership work with
African CBOs
• Developing health promotion campaigns
• Engaging in policy discussions (ie. HIV
testing, confidentiality and disclosure of
patient information)

Priorities
Shifted from:
• Traditional HIV prevention
focused on ‘uninfected’
Shifted to:
• Health promotion campaigns
with integrated messages –
addressing HIV testing and
access to services
• Focus on partnership with
broader stakeholders – refugee
groups, media, faith
communities, African businesses

Challenges
• History of continued focus on ‘uninfected’
• Programmes & messages that advocate fear; threats; chastising; blame;
abstinence only
• Programmes that do not address underlying issues that exacerbate
vulnerability of positive people
• Defining ‘Positive Prevention’ to satisfy the majority

Programmes that:
• Address & support practical
skills and needs
• Embody the GIPA principle
• Address underlying socio-

• Adopt a holistic approach to
prevention
