TREATMENT RESEARCH INSTITUTE
AboUT US
Since being established in 1992, the Treatment Research Institute (TRI) has been a leader
in the substance use research field, with a belief that science can only be truly impactful
when it is used to improve policies, programs and practices. Our work focuses on applying
research to change behaviors, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for individuals,
families and communities affected by addiction. Our collaborations with distinguished
partners from across the globe have enhanced our quest to advance the way in which
addiction is perceived and managed. TRI’s relentless commitment to discovering and
disseminating SOLUTIONS to substance-use problems drives our work, our mission and
our vision.
oUR MISSIoN ANd AppRoACH
TRI’s principal and driving objective is to use science to change behaviors in the area of
substance use disorders. We work to achieve our mission through four key initiatives/areas:
1 CONDUCTING RESEARCH and publishing our findings in academic journals and at
conferences around the world.
2 ENGINEERING SCIENCE-bASED TOOLS that meet the needs of families, schools,
criminal justice, treatment providers and the community.
3 INFORMING THE PUbLIC about the disease of addiction – and offering solutions.
4 IMPACTING POLICY by working with state, federal and international groups to provide
guidance on improving the overall system of care.
MUlTIdISCIplINARy ANd CollAboRATIvE
TRI is comprised of experts from multiple fields, each dedicated to applying their knowledge
to finding solutions for substance use problems. Our team includes academic researchers,
clinicians, data analysts, policy-makers and public affairs specialists. Our organization has a
long history of working across sectors to achieve major priorities, and draws on a breadth of
expertise to continue to be innovative and impactful in our work to prevent, intervene earlier
and effectively treat substance use disorders.

• Prior failure in drug rehabilitation
• Prior felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
• Unstable living arrangements
The following needs factors were identified:

Alerts and Adaptive Recommendations
Timely application of sanctions and rewards that are based on client progress are an
essential component of problem-solving courts.
TRI-CEP provides automatic alerts to all key stakeholders regarding client progress, and
provides specific recommendations on adjustments to supervision or treatment services to
keep the client on track. This system fosters judicial-clinical collaboration, improving client
outcomes and court efficiency and effectiveness.

Driving under the influence (DUI) represents a significant threat to public safety in the U.S.,
and a significant proportion of first-time DUI offenders go on to become repeat offenders.
Substantial resources have been expended to identify variables that predict DUI recidivism,
but less progress has been made in developing clinically useful tools to reduce it.

TRI scientists recently developed an empirically-based risk and needs triage tool to improve
how DUI offenders are assessed and managed, which could ultimately improve outcomes
for DUI offenders and reduce DUI recidivism. The tool generates criminogenic risk and
treatment need profiles for DUI offenders to help determine optimal levels of treatment and
supervision for each individual. We conducted a preliminary study that demonstrated the
ability of triage items to predict DUI recidivism.
We are currently running pilot studies with several DUI courts to further validate the tool.
The DUI RANT will provide a practical, evidence-based and cost-effective way of screening
DUI offenders to determine the levels of treatment and supervision that work best for
clients.
This ongoing research may help to inform and refine policy and sentencing guidelines.

Our work focuses on applying research to change behaviors, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for individuals, families and communities affected by addiction. Our collaborations with distinguished partners from across the globe have enhanced our quest to advance the way in which addiction is perceived and managed. TRI’s relentless commitment to discovering and disseminating SOLUTIONS to substance-use problems drives our work, our mission and our vision. oUR MISSIoN ANd AppRoACH TRI’s principal and driving objective is to use science to change behaviors in the area of substance use disorders. We work to achieve our mission through four key initiatives/areas: 1 CONDUCTING RESEARCH and publishing our findings in academic journals and at conferences around the world. 2 ENGINEERING SCIENCE-bASED TOOLS that meet the needs of families, schools, criminal justice, treatment providers and the community. 3 INFORMING THE PUbLIC about the disease of addiction – and offering solutions. 4 IMPACTING POLICY by working with state, federal and international groups to provide guidance on improving the overall system of care. MUlTIdISCIplINARy ANd CollAboRATIvE TRI is comprised of experts from multiple fields, each dedicated to applying their knowledge to finding solutions for substance use problems. Our team includes academic researchers, clinicians, data analysts, policy-makers and public affairs specialists. Our organization has a long history of working across sectors to achieve major priorities, and draws on a breadth of expertise to continue to be innovative and impactful in our work to prevent, intervene earlier and effectively treat substance use disorders. Through work with families, schools, criminal justice, treatment providers and the community, TRI strives to change the way addiction is perceived and managed. © 2013 Treatment Research Institute in the Works ... TRI scientists recently developed an empirically-based risk and needs triage tool to improve how DUI offenders are assessed and managed, which could ultimately improve outcomes for DUI offenders and reduce DUI recidivism. The tool generates criminogenic risk and treatment need profiles for DUI offenders to help determine optimal levels of treatment and supervision for each individual. We conducted a preliminary study that demonstrated the ability of triage items to predict DUI recidivism. We are currently running pilot studies with several DUI courts to further validate the tool. The DUI RANT will provide a practical, evidence-based and cost-effective way of screening DUI offenders to determine the levels of treatment and supervision that work best for clients. This ongoing research may help to inform and refine policy and sentencing guidelines.
