My current view of service relates to the ship from the ‘lighthouse” video. In the video, the ship needed the lighthouse to guide it and ensure that it would go in the right direction; avoiding a collision. While preparing for my service hours, I see myself as the ship, and my organization as the lighthouse. I have a broad idea of what I will be doing during my service hours but I’m still kind of sailing through the night, unsure of what to expect. I’m relying on my organization to sort of guide me in the right direction, just as the ship needed the lighthouse to guide it in the right direction.
Analysis
The organization I will be volunteering at is Crayons to Classrooms. On their website, their mission discusses securing and distributing school supplies at no cost to teachers of students in need. Their values encompass their beliefs in the power of education, treating all people with respect and dignity, striving to meet the highest ethical standards, conducting all aspects of business with integrity, and working as part of the community and being a responsible organization.
Chapter 4 of our text, The Leadership Challenge, discusses how leaders should “set the example”. “Setting the Example is all about the do part. It’s about doing what you say, practicing what you preach, following through on commitments, keeping promises, and walking the talk” (Kouzes & Poser, 2017). I believe that this aligns with my organization’s mission and values because Crayons to Classrooms does just that: they practice what they preach. They claim to be committed to helping teachers from under-funded schools get the supplies they need to help their students succeed. They follow through on this commitment by opening theirstore to eligible teachers 3 days a week, every week during the school year where they can shop for 100% free supplies for their students. By consistently gathering donations, stocking their store, and opening it up for teachers to shop at, they’re not only embodying their shared values, they’re modeling their values and practicing what they preach.

My final profile from the SLPI indicated that I prefer an Indirect type of service. I very much agree with this profile, and it doesn’t surprise me. I’m not very outgoing, and I prefer not to be in the spotlight. Customer service is definitely not my strong suit. I think the organization I’ll be volunteering at, Crayons to Classrooms, will be a good fit for my indirect profile. I’m going to be doing a lot of behind the scenes work such as helping make items to sell in their store, stocking and organizing the store, and various administrative tasks they may need help with. I’ll also be observing the program coordinator and a couple of events they’ll have going on while I’m there. I think tasks they have lined up for me will work best with my strengths and my indirect profile. The fact that I won’t be dealing directly with customers during my service learning will help.

The document discusses three social structure theories of crime: social disorganization theory, strain theory, and cultural conflict theory. Social disorganization theory proposes that crime results from a breakdown in social integration, as seen with Polish immigrants in the early 1900s who struggled to adapt customs from their homeland. Strain theory maintains that a lack of opportunities leads to crime as an alternative path to success, such as a poor young man selling drugs to support his family. Cultural conflict theory suggests that norms between two cultures can conflict and result in crime when members of one culture enter another, like honor killings practiced in some Middle Eastern cultures that immigrate to the U.S.

My Values
Loyalty is an important value to me because I believe it helps build a strength and bond
with those who are close to me. I have in the past broken my loyalty to someone who has
wronged me but what I have learned and continue to learn is that people deserve second
chances.
Love this has been a value that I have longed for but found it very hard to have without
reservation because of the lack of trust. I feel that there are few people in this world that I
love but I am opening up myself more too growing love for other people.
Consideration this value is important in my life because as a child my feelings were not
considered. I learned that I did not want to be cold or mean to other people because I know
what it feels like. I try every day to make sure that I am considerate of others personalities,
and feelings.
Compassion I believe that there is great pain and hardship in other people’s lives without
compassion for them I would be a cold and hard individual. It is important to my own
development in life to be understanding and helpful to other people who need it. I try to see
the real hardships in others and do what I can to help.
Responsibility This is the most powerful Value for me to live up too. I believe that I am a
responsible person but will continue to have to prove this through out my life. I think that
responsibility gives me a stronger spirit and makes me a stronger person. I have learned
that in order to be a true person I must take responsibility not only for the good things in
my life but also the mistakes I make.
Dedication this value represents not only a path but a tool for me to use in obtaining my
goals. I know that I am dedicated one hundred percent to any thing I start. I have a strong
sense of wanting to complete my path and helping others to do the same.
Respect this value is my second strongest value. I believe that respect is very important to
building a good relationship with anyone both personally and professionally. I know that in
my life I have not always shown respect but I do continue to make sure that I am trying.
Life learning I have always believed that I never stop learning in any endeavor I partake
in. I make it my mission to learn something from every situation, person, group, or subject I
come in contact with. I think life is a never ending teacher and I value
In a class on professional ethics for social service workers I was
required to write a paper on my personal ethics and what they mean
to me. As part of that paper I had to write my values and why they
are important in my life. This assignment allowed me to dig deep
into my moral core and draw out what is most important to me.
