1. I'm originally from Winnipeg MB, lived there for 22 years. While there, I completed one
year of university at University of Manitoba in the faculty of engineering. Turns out that
university wasn't for me at the time, so I decided to travel and see the world. Spent a year in
Galway, Ireland working in a hostel. Then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where I found work in
another hostel. After those two years I backpacked around continental Europe for six months
crossing 16 countries off my list. When I finally came back to Canada I moved to Estevan, SK
where I found employment as a wireline operator for four years. Needless to say after the four
years in the patch I had had enough, and realized that it was about time to start pursuing my
dream.
That dream, is to one day own and operate my own micro-brewery. Producing some of
the finest ales, stouts and other styles that the prairies and Canada have been missing in their
beer selection at their local beer/liquor store. It was in Scotland, at the Brew Dog brewery that
this dream finally hit me like a well hopped imperial IPA. What they were creating, I have never
seen the likes of in Winnipeg or the prairies of Canada. I knew then I wanted to bring these
creations back home so that I could share this experience with friends, family and other
Canadians, to show them what they were missing. I want to push aside the mentality of "I drink
what my dad drank", and start encouraging the masses to take risks and start enjoying beer. To
get people looking at beer as more than just an alcoholic beverage. I can easily see myself
producing and creating these libations for people on a daily basis. To one day be exporting my
beers internationally.
When I do own that brewery the mission statement for it is simply:
To strive for excellence in every batch we brew, to be as sustainable as we can be, for the
community and the environment. Practice safe practices so that everyone can go home, and to
carry out business ethically and with integrity.
There are some goals that I would like to accomplish to make this dream a reality.
Short-term:
- Graduate from Olds College from the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations
Management program with distinction.
- Find an internship while attending college within the brewing industry
- Learn as much as possible in my time at Olds College
- Utilize and take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself while at school
Long-term:
- Own and operate my own brewery
- Sell and distribute my beer nationally and internationally
- Branch out in to distilling as well.
- Strive for excellence in every endeavor
2. Skills and Attributes:
- Hard working with a good work ethic
- Highly motivated
- Fast learner
- Trustworthy, loyal, and honest
- People skills
- Good listener with communications skills
- Fluent in English and French, able to speak and understand basic Spanish
- Leadership, organizational skills, and event coordinating
- Always strive for excellence
Along with these goals and skills, a code of ethics is an important part of any business
whether it be a future one or present. My code of ethics would be the following:
To operate above board on any and all matters with in the business, community and
environment. This includes sustainability, and customer service. To conduct oneself as a
professional, treating customers and co-workers as they themselves would like to be treated.
To speak up on any matters that need to be address immediately, or when a facet of the
operation can be improved.
