The document discusses the author's struggles with writing poetry. While they have tried for hours to craft decent poems, nothing ever feels good enough. The author lacks a solid understanding of human emotion and the language to fully express feelings. They would prefer to write more disturbing or funny topics rather than fluffy romance. The author doesn't hate poetry, just all the strict rules around forms like haiku. In the end, the author isn't sure if their writing even counts as a poem.
This is an off-the-cuff piece I came up with late at night one day soon after visiting Denmark. Late night in Seattle winter sparks a certain section of the imagination.

The Failed Idealist's Guide to the Tatty Truth by Fergus McGonigalBurning Eye
Fergus McGonigal takes Ogden Nash’s notion of a poem being an essay which rhymes and targets the unsentimental truth about parenthood, pseudo-intellectual pretentiousness and pomposity, and what happens when the idealism of youth has given way to the disappointment of middle-age. As you would expect of a slam veteran, Fergus’s poems are comic entertainments but beneath the manic laughter there always lies a grain of familiar truth.
‘Fergus McGonigal reaches the parts which other poets cannot reach’
CHELTENHAM POETRY FESTIVAL
‘Bold, brash and brilliant!’
WORCESTER LITFEST AND FRINGE
‘Vibrant, wild and funny, and that’s just his hair. Fergus McGonigal is a poet and performer of verve, energy and pizzaz. Shame he can’t spell his name properly.’

1. Why are.
Why are fire trucks red
Why are cats afraid of cucumbers
Why are the Kardashians Famous
Why are manhole covers round
Why are my nipples sore
Why are people gay
Why are GMOs bad
Why are barns red
Why are cells so small
Why are we here..
Untitled
I have never been that good at poetry
It’s not that I haven’t tried, because trust me I have spent hours trying to craft something decent
but nothing ever seems good enough
So it usually ends up scraped
Poetry is the essence of human emotion, to which I lack a solid understanding of
No, it is not that I don’t understand it's that I lack the language to fully express that to which I am
feeling describes my situation better
I wish I could describe the way my girlfriend’s lips feel when they touch my skin
Or the way I feel when I stare at the ceiling at night when I can’t fall asleep
I long to be able to capture beautiful moments in time
The kind of fluff that makes young girls hearts flutter but let's be real I’m not that kind of writer
I prefer to write goar to fluff
I would rather write something gross and disturbing like a serial killer tearing out someone’s left
eye with a pair of scissors
Or something funny, like using the word ‘rosebud’ to describe a woman’s clit
I get it things mean other things but why not be I don’t know blut about the things you’re writing
about because let's be honest
I don’t want to spend hours trying to dissect one of Shakespeare's many dick jokes because
some english teacher believes it to be deep.
I don’t hate poetry, I just hate all the rules I have to follow to write a stupid Haiku or how I have
to make taking a massive dump is like the most beautiful thing ever
But then again have you ever had Taco bell?
I don’t even know how to end this
Or if this even counts as a poem
Fuck it.
