  1. Welcome to podcasting Angledust, We’re going to try and cover two different areas of best practices for building your audience through real means and not through magic
  2. First a little about myself. There are a lot of things that people remember about me but I guess the most prevalent is that
  3. I like coffee… a lot…
  4. Tea drinkers can now leave please…
  5. So much so that I started the caffination podcast, I focus on Caffeine Culture and Technology News
  6. I do many things
  7. I also work at Temple, in the Architecture department as the Jack of all trades
  8. And now for something completely different
  9. There are a lot of different podcasts,blogs and sites out there right now. And each one is looking for a way to be different a way to separate themselves from the pack.
  10. In short they are all looking for some type of magic bullet to get their show shot up the charts. There are a great many ways to build an audience but I have found one that works for me, I’ve been doing my show for over two years now, I have a steadily increasing audience and I often get asked how I can do it, and wether I’m a bit crazy
  11. I guess I am. But I do have my methods.
  12. This sums up most of what you’re audience is looking for without them really knowing it. We’ll take it point by point and go a bit beyond but it helps to see them all together
  13. This is the easiest one to set up and one of the hardest to keep to. Schedule yourself enough time to do your show and do your listeners a service by dropping the episode on them at the same date, and the same time if you can. If people don’t know when to get your content then they might become disinterested. Set a schedule and keep to it.
  14. You’re going to have to make a few decisions about why you’re here… not just at podcamp but why you are producing content
  15. You didn’t think you were going to get away with only one coffee photo did you? You don’t have to make up your mind all at once just keep these questions in your head as you go forward It could be for Money Community Causes Utility Teaching Or whatever else
  16. Don’t be afraid of, blow it up and move on.
  17. Don’t be afraid of failure, blow it up and move on.
  18. Embrace what went wrong and learn from it
  19. You will end up naturally developing a style for your show, do it long enough you will settle into different ways of doing things. More than that, stay on message. Its alright to deviate from time to time, podcasts are personal things, but if you run a show about cats don’t start talking about oil prices for a month, and expect your cat lovers to stick around. Commit to Consistency Another easy saying but hard to follow through. This is where feedback is very important, conversation
  20. You need to find a metric to base your success or failure off of, be they stats, self satisfaction, income. Develop a loose rubric to judge your performance.
  21. Passion is the only magic a show has
  22. Certain topics invoke passion in your listeners, be it Mac vs PC, be it love of coffee, be it politics
  23. Passion is probably the most difficult of the three to nail down and takes the most maintenance and planning.
  24. Starbucks has had some very interesting problems with passion, some love it and there is a growing trend among coffee lovers to hate it as well.
  25. Digg Slashdot Internet Meme’s Great for traffic while they last, but don’t usually translate to long term gains
  26. There is no get rich quick fix
  27. Instant success isn’t real for everyone, however you can people engaged by staging various campaigns Think TV sweeps without the irritating commercials.
  28. This is ColorWars, started by Zefrank, and my experience with it. Meme’s only work for you if they are simple, engaging and have a relation back to your site
  29. Not just about content, its about managing the ebb and flow of people’s interest
  30. If you keep introducing new campaigns new features that allow people to interact with your show and your content in different ways then your audience will stay energized and fresh. Anniversaries,
  31. Free stuff is great. And it can drum up business but beware that quite often swag usually means people come out of the woodwork then fade right back in
