Plate tectonics involves the movement and interactions of tectonic plates in the earth's crust which can cause volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. When plates collide, they can push up mountain ranges or subduct under each other, and when they move apart rift valleys and ocean basins are formed. Landforms such as volcanoes and mountains are closely associated with plate tectonic boundaries at convergent and divergent plate margins.
