Plate tectonics is the theory that the Earth's outer layer is divided into plates that move around on the mantle. There are 7 major plates that move at varying speeds in different directions. Plate boundaries are where two plates meet, and there are three types - convergent where plates push together, divergent where they pull apart, and transform where they slide past each other.
