Sur-Flo Plastics & Engineering Inc. shifted from a manufacturing layout with one operator per press to a cell structure that better utilized employees' abilities. It invested in automation equipment and engineering capabilities. Now with $40 million in annual business up from $35 million, the changes allowed the company to retain the same number of employees but use them more efficiently. The company is considering expanding with a new plant in the southern U.S. to reduce freight costs as it competes on low prices.
