- Painting has been my own form of “Trauma Debriefing”..while many a survivor in Haiyan-devastated Tacloban resorted to being debriefed by cause-oriented groups and Intervention, I choose to mourn with my canvasses and paints given to me by friends in the comfort of my University Office room which I call “The Haiyan Suite”, my lodgings for the meantime..
- Announcing the Arrival of Haiyan (“Yolanda”) was just like any typhoon announcement. We are a country besot by storms and hurricanes where we do the standard procedure: hoarding victuals, doing necessary constructions to strengthen the domicile, buy candles, petrol; evacuate to sturdier buildings etc… we did not know the magnanimity of this supertyphoon. Many underestimated it…
- My escape to my son’s family in Thailand did me wonders. My son Dominic started to “Stress Debrief” me by giving me a space in his home and some art materials where I could work. “Do not speak about it, Mommy..we get it in the news…just paint what you feel.” Thus, my own trauma debriefing started.
- After knowing of my predicament, my second son sent me a ticket to come to Thailand to spend Christmas with his family and grandkids…and to take my mind away from what has happened..
- Back in Tacloban from my quarters in the University, the trees outside seem to moan…
- Altho many enjoyed colourful banana leaves, many hesitated buying this painting…
- With a promise of living quarters in our Tacloban Unit and some financial relief from the President of the University, I went back to my devastated city. This painting I gave to the University President…
- How high did the water rise?
- A young instructor was in the crossroads of her second life, whether she’d remain teaching or finish her law studies. She told me of her dream…
- An old painting I did in 1981 which shows the “Taklub” (fishtrap)
- I lost all my personal belongings and property to the Storm and Looting…
- Even though I use pigment extensively, I can’t get away fom the computer…
