Physical changes alter the form or shape of a substance but not its chemical composition. They include changes of state from solid to liquid to gas or vice versa, as when ice melts to become water. Chemical changes create new substances through rearrangement of the original atoms, as when wood burns and forms ash and gases like carbon dioxide. Physical and chemical changes can be distinguished by observing whether new substances are formed.
