Hurricane Floyd caused significant damage along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States in September 1999. It resulted in 79 deaths and over 100,000 people seeking shelter in 9 affected states from Florida to Maine. North Carolina was hit hardest with 47 deaths, bridges and over 50,000 homes being damaged by winds up to 250kph and 500mm of rain that flooded 30,000 square km. The Federal Emergency Management Agency provided disaster relief including shelter, supply kits and assistance boarding up windows for over 100,000 registered victims.
