Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates calcium and phosphate levels by promoting their absorption from the intestines and bones and reabsorption in the kidneys. It does this by increasing osteolysis, osteoclast activity, and vitamin D conversion in the kidneys. Calcitonin has opposing effects to PTH and lowers calcium levels by decreasing osteolysis and osteoclast activity. Hypoparathyroidism causes hypocalcemia due to decreased bone resorption and reabsorption in the kidneys.
