DEFINITION OF PERSPECTIVE:
a particular attitude towards or way of regarding
something; a point of view.
3. DEFINITION OF HEALTH:
Health is a complete state of physical, mental and
social well being, and not merely an absence of disease.
Hence, mental health is an integral and essential
component of health.
It is the state of balance between the individual and the
surrounding world, a state of harmony between oneself
and others, a co-existence between the realities of the
self and that of other people and the environment.
4. DEFINITION OF MENTAL HEALTH:
The WHO defines mental health as a
state of well being in which an
individual realizes his or her own
abilities, can cope with the normal
stresses of life, can work productively
and is able to make contributions to
his or her community.
5. COMPONENTS OF MENTAL HEALTH
This include:
THE ABILITY TO ACCEPT SELF: a mentally healthy
person feels comfortable about himself/herself. He feels
secure reasonably secure and adequately accepts his
surroundings.
THE CAPACITY TO FEEL RIGHT TOWARDS
OTHERS: an individual who enjoys good mental health
is able to be sincerely interested in others welfare. He is
able to feel a part of a group without being submerged
by it. He takes responsibility for his neighbours and his
fellow embers.
6. THE ABILITY TO FULFILLS LIFE
TASKS: a mentally healthy person is
able to think for himself, set reasonable
goals, and take his own decision. He
does something about the problems as
they arise.
7. INDICATORS OF MENTAL HEALTH:
JAHODA has identified SIX indicators ofmental
health :
1) A positive attitude towards self: this includes
an objective view of self, including knowledge and
acceptance of strength and limitations. The
individual feels a strong sense of personal identity
and security within environment:
8. 2) growth, development and ability for self
actualization: this indicators correlates with
whether the individual successfully achieves the
tasks associated with each level of development.
3) integration: it includes ability to adaptively
respond to the environment and the development of
the philosophy of life, both of which help the
individual maintain anxiety at a manageable levl in
response to stressful situation:
9. 4) Autonomy: it refers to an individuals ability to
perform in an independent self-directed manner;
the individual makes choices and accepts
responsibilities for the outcome.
5) perception of reality: this includes perception of
the environment without distortion, as well as the
capacity for empathy and social sensitivity- a
respect and concern for the wants and needs of
others.
10. 6) environmental mastery: this indicator suggests
that the individual has achieved a satisfactory role
within the group, society or environment.

13. MENTAL ILLNESS:
Mental illness is the maladjustment in
living. It produces a disharmony in the
persons ability to meet human needs
comfortably and function within
culture.
A mentally ill person loses his ability to
respod according to the expectation he
has for himself and the demand that
society has for him.
14. DEFINITION OF MENTAL ILLNESS:
This is defined as the alteration in thinking , mood
(emotions) or behaviors associated with personal
stress and/or impaired functioning.

15. CHARACTERISTICS OF MENTAL
ILLNESS:
Changes in ones thinking, memory, perception,
feeling and judgment resulting in changes in talk
and behavior.
The changes in behavior cause distress and
suffering to the individual or others
Changes and the consequent distress cause
disturbance in day to day activities, work and
relationship with important/ or others (social and
vocational dysfunction).
