Editor's Notes

  • #2 I am interested in Personalized Learning. I believe that interest stems from the fact that I teach public speaking. It is a very individual subject since no students are at the same speaking level.
  • #3 I believe that a student can reach his/her highest potential when lessons and work are individualized. A student’s strengthens can be highlighted while the student’s weaknesses can be bolstered. This is the best way to get the best results in a public speaking class. Individually helping a student will lead to successful learning.
  • #4 Personalized Learning involves a teacher giving a student individual work and watching the progress of that work. The teacher engages the student in the learning. The student is more likely to complete the work because the student is motivated and goal oriented.
  • #5 The student follows customized instruction that changes based on the student’s active learning. It stands to reason, if a student follows this type of learning that student will be more engaged in the learning. We need to remember each student is an individual so learning should be individual.
  • #6 Pernille Ripp, in her October 31st 2014 blog ,“6 changes toward personalized learning” says that teachers need to listen to the students. This will allow students to explore what they are passionate about learning. The teacher allows the student to show when a skill has been mastered. The student controls the educational journey.
  • #7 There are a number of common arguments against Personalized Learning. The most common argument is that students will pursue their own interests and not learn standards or learning objectives. Another common argument is that students may become frustrated or the students may lack the motivation needed for this type of learning.
  • #8 In my classroom, I believe a form of Personalized Learning works best. Every student must learn but how the material is learned should be directed by the teacher along with the student. This approach will personalized the learning for a student. One important thing to remember is that each student will need to reach the same learning goals.
