3. Based on the novel written by Stephen
Chbosky, this is about 15-year-old Charlie
(Logan Lerman), an endearing and naive
outsider, coping with first love , the suicide of
his best friend, and his own mental illness
while struggling to find a group of people with
whom he belongs.
The introvert freshman is taken under the
wings of two seniors, Sam (Emma Watson)
and Patrick (Ezra Miller), who welcome him
to the real world.
4. The Samples– "Could It Be Another Change"
Dexys Midnight Runners – "Come On Eileen"
Galaxie 500 – "Tugboat"
New Order – "Temptation"
The Innocence Mission – "Evensong"
The Smiths – "Asleep"
Cracker – "Low"
Sonic Youth – "Teen Age Riot"
XTC – "Dear God"
Cocteau Twins – "Pearly Dewdrops' Drops"
Michael Brook – "Charlie's Last Letter"
David Bowie – "Heroes"
5. Charlie’s a little funnier, a little bolder, and wallows a
little less.
Charlie’s family is present in the film, but is mostly
streamlined out of the plot for the sake of time and
narrative flow.
We get to see Charlie’s teacher Bill’s classroom
dynamics.
In the tunnel scene, Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” is
replaced with “Heroes” by David Bowie.
There are more religious overtones than are present in
the book.
6. This is most notable about this funny, touching,
memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the
resounding accuracy with which the author captures the
voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood.
We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to
someone of undisclosed name, age, and gender, a stylistic
technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness
saturating this teen's story.
