This document provides information in response to an unstarred question asked in the Lok Sabha regarding pending court cases in India. The summary is: 1) There are over 51.5 million pending cases in High Courts and over 34.4 million pending cases in lower courts according to details provided in annexures. 2) The central government enacted the Gram Nyayalayas Act in 2008 to provide access to justice at the local level and reduce pendency by establishing rural courts. 395 courts have been notified across 12 states but only 225 are operational. 3) The central government encourages states to set up more rural courts by providing financial assistance and has requested states and high courts to expedite their establishment
