INTRODUCTION:
❑Good health is the greatest assets and without it one can hardly expect to succeed in
any walk of life.
❑ Yoga is one of the kayakarpam rejuvenation science methods of the siddha system of
medicine.
❑Yoga in India is an easy solution for many people to provide physical and
physiological health.
Ayakalai 64:
❑The Tamil Arts consist of sixty-four (Ayakalaigal 64) methods, with Yoga as
the Tenth Art in the Ayakalai sixty-four.
❑Yoga is a meditation science and comprises eight types of siddhis, including
medical postures (Yogasanam).
Astanga Yogam Divisons
a) Iyamam- Purity of mind
b) Niyamam- Purity of Action
c) Asanam – Posture
d) Pranayamam- Breathing Technique
e) Prathiyangaram- Controlling the sense
f) Dharanai- Concentrating mind
g) Dhyanam - Meditation
h) Samathi- Attaining Godhood
Yogadiffer for differentagegroups;
1. There’s no general consensus for when a child can start the practice of Yoga.
2. Agree that children of age 5 years and above could start practice of Yoga.
3. The younger age group between 5 and 10 years are usually taught the yoga practice
in the form of play/ games/ songs to engage them effectively in the practice.
4. Yoga poses simulating animals/ objects are chosen for age group of 5-10 years.
Precautions to be takenbeforeattending
a yoga class;
1. Yoga should be practiced on empty stomach.
2. A minimum of 2 hours gap after breakfast and 3 hours gap after a full meal is
recommended before the practice of Yoga.
3. Yoga teacher must instruct the children to not exert beyond their capacity.
Children’sbenefitfromYoga;
1. It strengthens their lung and cardiac functions.
2. Improve sensory – motor performance and enhances processing ability of their
nervous system.
3. Improves their memory, attention span, concentration, planning and execution
skills.
4. It improves their moods and alleviates stress and anxiety.
5. Increase emotional stability, reduce fear and feelings of helplessness, negative
feelings.
How yoga impacts our brain positively?
❑Basically the concept is very simple, when we practice yoga, GABA (gamma-amino
butyric acid) levels in our brain increase.
❑This neurotransmitter calms our mind by supplanting neural activity. There are
evidences, which show that just one hour of yoga can boost GABA levels as much
by 27 percent.
❑yoga supports healthy gray matter in the brain, thereby leading to improved
memory and increased feelings of happiness.
❑Over time, yoga on brain boost self-control and decision-making abilities.
❑Deep breathing, muscle relaxation, mindfulness, meditation, etc. used in yoga can
rewire our brain and improve its chemical composition.
Children’salreadyactivein sports,how
else will practiceof Yoga benefit;
1. Yoga improves the activity of parasympathetic nervous system which is
responsible for better relaxation.
2. Yoga has lesser risk of injuries than sports.
3. Yoga mat improves their cardio- respiratory strength which in turn improves
their performance in athletics and other sports.
4. Childrens practicing yogic controlled breathing and chanting techniques.
I don't think Children’ssit still & may not find Yoga
to be interesting;How can this be handled?
1. Different approaches could be used such as animations/ songs/ dance/ games/ role
play to teach Yoga postures to the children and to keep them engaged throughout
the session.
2. Positive reinforcement and rewards could also be used to encourage the children to
improve their performance.
3. Activity based Yoga postures are taught to the children to retain their interest for
the entire Yoga session.

Contraindications for childrenwhen
practicingYoga?
1. Recommend that children with epilepsy should not practice fast breathing
techniques kapalbhati/ bhastrika pranayamam.
1. Yoga should not be performed when the child is sick, such as with a cold,flu,
headache or vomiting.
2. Children with any problems with the back should avoid certain Yoga practices such as
bow pose, acute forward bends padahasthasana and pashimottanasana and
advanced back bends chakrasana.
3. Children with heart diseases should avoid inverted poses such as sarvangasana or
sirsasana
Yogais a religiouspractice?
1. It’s not a religious practice. Yoga is an ancient practice which is now being
studied with scientific rigor.
2. Adopting Namaskar mudra and chanting om is optional and can be replaced
by sitting with palms facing upwards and simple humming chants.
3. It will not interfere with your child’s or your family’s religious beliefs.
UsefullYoga Asanasfor Children;
❑Depending on the age, different yoga practices ranging from yogic games, physical
postures and breathing techniques to medication can be taught.
❑Surya Namakaram 6-12 rounds is one practice which should be taught to all children
from 5 years and above along with Nadishuddhi pranayama 3 minutes.
MENTALLEVEL:
❑Yogasana like Shavasana (Corpse Pose), helps you
concentrate on the stress stored in every part of the
body, thereby helping you to release stress in the
process. Also, inverted poses help the blood flow into
the brain, which increases brain’s function.
❑Due to which the stress hormone cortisol levels in our
brain drop. Also, it promotes better sleep, which is
crucial for the effective functioning of the brain in day to
day life.
PRANAYAMAM
EncouragingYoga for childrenin the future;
❑Early to bed and early to rise is the first yoga practice to
maintain good health- BRAHMA MUHURTHA. (3.30 a.m. – 5.30
a.m. IST)
❑Every child has the right to develop to their fullestpotential.
❑Parents and educators have the power to help them create
strong willpower and vigor through successful methods of
stress alleviation.
❑Music, imagination & Yoga have proven to be great ways for
little ones to work on their physical and mental strength.

INTRODUCTION: ❑Good health is the greatest assets and without it one can hardly expect to succeed in any walk of life. ❑ Yoga is one of the kayakarpam rejuvenation science methods of the siddha system of medicine. ❑Yoga in India is an easy solution for many people to provide physical and physiological health.
  • 3. Ayakalai 64: ❑The Tamil Arts consist of sixty-four (Ayakalaigal 64) methods, with Yoga as the Tenth Art in the Ayakalai sixty-four. ❑Yoga is a meditation science and comprises eight types of siddhis, including medical postures (Yogasanam).

  • 5. Astanga Yogam Divisons a) Iyamam- Purity of mind b) Niyamam- Purity of Action c) Asanam – Posture d) Pranayamam- Breathing Technique e) Prathiyangaram- Controlling the sense f) Dharanai- Concentrating mind g) Dhyanam - Meditation h) Samathi- Attaining Godhood
  • 6. Yogadiffer for differentagegroups; 1. There’s no general consensus for when a child can start the practice of Yoga. 2. Agree that children of age 5 years and above could start practice of Yoga. 3. The younger age group between 5 and 10 years are usually taught the yoga practice in the form of play/ games/ songs to engage them effectively in the practice. 4. Yoga poses simulating animals/ objects are chosen for age group of 5-10 years.
  • 7. Precautions to be takenbeforeattending a yoga class; 1. Yoga should be practiced on empty stomach. 2. A minimum of 2 hours gap after breakfast and 3 hours gap after a full meal is recommended before the practice of Yoga. 3. Yoga teacher must instruct the children to not exert beyond their capacity.
  • 8. Children’sbenefitfromYoga; 1. It strengthens their lung and cardiac functions. 2. Improve sensory – motor performance and enhances processing ability of their nervous system. 3. Improves their memory, attention span, concentration, planning and execution skills. 4. It improves their moods and alleviates stress and anxiety. 5. Increase emotional stability, reduce fear and feelings of helplessness, negative feelings.

How yoga impacts our brain positively? ❑Basically the concept is very simple, when we practice yoga, GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) levels in our brain increase. ❑This neurotransmitter calms our mind by supplanting neural activity. There are evidences, which show that just one hour of yoga can boost GABA levels as much by 27 percent. ❑yoga supports healthy gray matter in the brain, thereby leading to improved memory and increased feelings of happiness. ❑Over time, yoga on brain boost self-control and decision-making abilities. ❑Deep breathing, muscle relaxation, mindfulness, meditation, etc. used in yoga can rewire our brain and improve its chemical composition.

  • 11. Children’salreadyactivein sports,how else will practiceof Yoga benefit; 1. Yoga improves the activity of parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for better relaxation. 2. Yoga has lesser risk of injuries than sports. 3. Yoga mat improves their cardio- respiratory strength which in turn improves their performance in athletics and other sports. 4. Childrens practicing yogic controlled breathing and chanting techniques.
  • 12. I don't think Children’ssit still & may not find Yoga to be interesting;How can this be handled? 1. Different approaches could be used such as animations/ songs/ dance/ games/ role play to teach Yoga postures to the children and to keep them engaged throughout the session. 2. Positive reinforcement and rewards could also be used to encourage the children to improve their performance. 3. Activity based Yoga postures are taught to the children to retain their interest for the entire Yoga session.
  • 16. Contraindications for childrenwhen practicingYoga? 1. Recommend that children with epilepsy should not practice fast breathing techniques kapalbhati/ bhastrika pranayamam.
  • 17. 1. Yoga should not be performed when the child is sick, such as with a cold,flu, headache or vomiting. 2. Children with any problems with the back should avoid certain Yoga practices such as bow pose, acute forward bends padahasthasana and pashimottanasana and advanced back bends chakrasana. 3. Children with heart diseases should avoid inverted poses such as sarvangasana or sirsasana
  • 18. Yogais a religiouspractice? 1. It’s not a religious practice. Yoga is an ancient practice which is now being studied with scientific rigor. 2. Adopting Namaskar mudra and chanting om is optional and can be replaced by sitting with palms facing upwards and simple humming chants. 3. It will not interfere with your child’s or your family’s religious beliefs.

UsefullYoga Asanasfor Children; ❑Depending on the age, different yoga practices ranging from yogic games, physical postures and breathing techniques to medication can be taught. ❑Surya Namakaram 6-12 rounds is one practice which should be taught to all children from 5 years and above along with Nadishuddhi pranayama 3 minutes.

  • 22. MENTALLEVEL: ❑Yogasana like Shavasana (Corpse Pose), helps you concentrate on the stress stored in every part of the body, thereby helping you to release stress in the process. Also, inverted poses help the blood flow into the brain, which increases brain’s function. ❑Due to which the stress hormone cortisol levels in our brain drop. Also, it promotes better sleep, which is crucial for the effective functioning of the brain in day to day life.
