Western Carolina University

November 10, 2011

Dear Professor Duncan,

As you know, I am currently working in the English department office and one of your colleagues has
mentioned that you may be looking for extra help with the Spring Literary Festival. Would you be
interested in supervising a student intern for the Spring 2012 semester? I am looking to start my
internship in January and hoping to help the English department in some way, if possible. I enjoy
attending the festival every year, but I think that helping you with the planning and with the actual
events would be an amazing experience. I believe that I could be of great assistance to you and would
really enjoy the opportunity to work with you.

Attached to this email, you will find my resume and some of my most recent projects. I have included a
brochure I designed for my desktop publishing class, and all of the photos, content, and logo designs on
the brochure are my creations as well. I have also added a newsletter, business card, and sign I created
as a volunteer project for a local organization. I would love the chance to create Literary Festival
materials for the upcoming events, if you do not already have someone else lined up for this project.

Another area in which I feel qualified to help is communication. I enjoy working with the public and feel
comfortable making contact with others, be it by phone, email, or meeting them face-to-face. I am sure
you have many people you will need to contact as you prepare for upcoming events, and I could help
you with this task so that you can focus on other event preparations. Also, I have seen the Literary
Festival’s website and Facebook pages, and I could regularly update and maintain the content for both
of these, as a way to keep the public interested in the festival.

For my internship, I am required to complete 150-200 hours between January and April and I would
appreciate the opportunity to work my student internship with you. I can be reached by phone at
828.508.0460 or by email at wsbuchanan1@catamount.wcu.edu and I look forward to speaking with
you soon.

Thank you for considering me for a student internship with the 2012 Spring Literary Festival.

Sincerely,

Wendy Buchanan
