A growing senior population fueling growth in home health monitoring, with the installed
number of devices expected to grow to 36M in 2017, up from less than 3M in 2011
(ABI Research).
The global market for clothing and accessories with embedded health-monitoring
gadgets such as heart rate monitors and running speed sensors is expected to grow
to 170M devices by 2017, 41% CAGR (GigaOm).
M-health has become the fastest-growing segment of the tele-health and telemedicine
market. New research projects in the global marketplace will reach $11.8B by 2018,
with a 39% CAGR. Seventy percent of apps are aimed at consumers (GlobalData).
The medical apps market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 25% through 2016
(Kalorama).
U.S. spent $660M of the $1.2B global expenditure on mHealth technology in 2011.
Europe spent $420M and the Asia-Pacific region contributed $120M (GlobalData).

Patrick Quinn, Co-founder and CEO - Quinn brings more than 20 years of business management and
technology expertise to PatientKey. He was Chairman, President and CEO of AltaSens, which he sold to
Olympus in December, 2008 at a $100+M valuation. Prior to AltaSens, Quinn founded Wave7 Optics, a
worldwide leading telecom provider of fiber-to-the-premise equipment, which was acquired by Enablence
(TSX: ENA) in April 2008. Quinn has twenty issued patents in semiconductors, wireless, and optical access
technology.
Piyush Gupta, CTO - Gupta brings more than 19 years of experience in developing healthcare products
for patients, providers and payers. Before joining PatientKey, Gupta was CTO at ISSIO Solutions, with
EMRs deployed in ambulatory surgical centers nationwide, where he drove product strategy and design,
developed strategic partnerships, and led local and offshore teams. He has also served in a variety of
leadership roles in product management, product development, and operations in several multinational
medical technology companies. Gupta holds a B.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology.
Steve Millard - Millard is a veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur and co-founder of four NASDAQ-
listed companies. He is a co-founder of PatientKey.
Michael Malone - Malone is one of the world’s best-known technology writers. He is a co-founder of
PatientKey.
Brett Galloway - Galloway brings to PatientKey more than 25 years of experience in the technology
industry, with a string of startup successes as well as successful large company experience

Mary Smith Needs Help
The last few years have been difficult for
Mary Smith. Fifty-three years old, she has
been struggling for decades with obesity and
diabetes. Then, two years ago, she suffered
a heart attack. She recovered well, but now
she has just been diagnosed with very high
blood pressure—suggesting that her weight
problem is now taking another toll. If her high
blood pressure and sugar levels are not
controlled she may have another heart attack
or suffer other complications of diabetes such
as blindness, amputation, or stroke. That she
lives alone and miles from her doctor only
makes her situation worse: her deteriorating
health is making her less and less able to
make her doctor’s appointments.

Dr. Jones and Nurse Lee Deliver Mary’s Care Remotely
Mary’s physician Dr. Jones clicks the Patient
Key Platform (PKP) button on his EMR screen
and logs into the PKP. After calling up Mary’s
page, he prescribes the VA Diabetes Bundle—
including Fitness Buddy, Glucose Buddy,
iBGStar Meter, Withings Blood Pressure
Monitor, Diabetes Tracker, and Fitbit Zip—as
well as Cardio Buddy and Nike+ FuelBand. All
of these apps and devices are also regularly
used by the patients of the clinic’s care
coordinator, Nurse Jennifer Lee; and they also
all share a five-star PKP ranking. At the same
time, Mary’s employer, NanoSoft, has identified
high blood sugar as a main health challenge to
its employees—and is offering a discount on the
VA Diabetes Bundle, Fitness Buddy, and Cardio
Buddy.

Mary purchases the apps and devices from
the PKP using her Patient Key account. Also,
following Nurse Lee’s recommendations, she
downloads the portfolio of free and retail
apps—including one which can recommend
food based on her last few blood pressure/
glucose readings (even suggesting she stay
away from the fast food joint she is currently
driving past). Another notifies her about
activities she can do based upon her location
and the weather—i.e., if the weather is good
and she is in the park, it will tell her that if she
walks for 20 minutes she will burn 100
calories.

Every time Mary uses one of the health
apps or devices prescribed by Nurse Lee

data streams are integrated to give Mary,
Dr. Jones, and Nurse Lee a complete
and dynamic ‘control panel’ of Mary’s
current health.

Over the next six months, Nurse Lee
regularly checks in on Mary’s vitals and
adherence. She can look at Mary’s short
and long-term usage and determine if
Mary is committed to improving her health,
understands the equipment, and is using her
apps and devices as prescribed.

PatientKey Saves Mary’s Life
The most recent readings from Glucose Buddy shows
that Mary’s blood pressure is dangerously high. As a
result, the PKP automatically lists her in the ‘Alerts’
category on Dr. Jones’ home page. Seeing this when
she stops in her office between patient visits, Nurse
Lee moves Mary from the ‘Alerts’ category to the
‘Priority’ category and notifies Dr. Jones, who quickly
calls up the results of Mary’s latest blood pressure
readings. He also calls up her glucose level. It too is at
a dangerous level—and has been continuously
climbing over the last forty-eight hours.
Dr. Jones asks Nurse Lee to immediately contact Mary
and check on her status. Nurse Lee calls Mary on her
cell phone and finds Mary is alone at home and not
well. Nurse Lee sends an ambulance to Mary’s home.
Mary goes into cardiac arrest on the way to the
hospital, but because she is in the right place, the
paramedics save her life.

Mary is a PatientKey Believer

Mary, better now, is home from the hospital, and 30
pounds lighter. She logs into her PatientKey
account and gives a five-star ranking to the
Glucose Buddy app and leaves a glowing review.
Meanwhile, with her vital signs now back in the
safe range, Nurse Lee removes Mary from the
‘Priority’ category on Dr. Jones’ PatientKey home
page. The PKP also reminds them that it is Mary’s
birthday, in case they want to drop her a note—and
a gift certificate to the local juice bar.
Moving forward, Mary’s data continues to be
updated on the PKP, anonymized, and made
available to her employer, NanoSoft. HR continues
to monitor its employees to determine which apps
and devices are worthy of discounts.

Fifty-three years old, she has been struggling for decades with obesity and diabetes. Then, two years ago, she suffered a heart attack. She recovered well, but now she has just been diagnosed with very high blood pressure—suggesting that her weight problem is now taking another toll. If her high blood pressure and sugar levels are not controlled she may have another heart attack or suffer other complications of diabetes such as blindness, amputation, or stroke.
