WHAT IS PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS (PDA)
 PDA is a heart defect found in the days or weeks after birth.
 It occurs because a normal fetal connection between the
aorta and the pulmonary artery does not close as it should
after birth.
 PDA happens most often in premature infants. It often occurs
with other congenital heart defects.
 A small PDA may close on its own as your child grows. If it is
large or does not close, your child will need a repair
procedure.
 An infant or child with PDA will be cared for by a pediatric

WHY IS A PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS A PROBLEM ?
 With a PDA, blood flows from the aorta through the
PDA into the pulmonary artery. This causes increased
blood flow to the lungs.
 If the PDA is large, too much blood goes to the lungs
and recirculates to the left ventricle. This can
cause fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema).
Then the baby has a hard time breathing and
feeding.
 In severe cases, the combination of the increased
blood flow to the lungs and work to the left ventricle
can lead to congestive heart failure (CHF). This is a
condition in which the heart no longer pumps blood
well.

Tubular duct without any
constriction.
Type D
complex duct with multiple

edge of the trachea (as
viewed on lateral
angiography).

SYMPTOMS OF PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS
 Poor eating (which lead to poor growth).
 Sweating with crying or eating.
 Persistent fast breathing or breathlessness.
 Easy tiring.
 Rapid heart rate.
 Skin turns a blue colour from not getting enough
oxygen.
 Infections.
 In older children, trouble doing activities.

DIAGNOSIS FOR PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS
 ECG: Electrocardiogram is a test to detect and record
heart’s electrical activity and help to locate the heart
problem.
 Echocardiogram: An echocardiogram records the
electrical activity in the heart each time it contracts.
 Chest X-ray: It show the structure of the heart and
lungs. A common sign of tetralogy of Fallot on an X-
ray is a "boot-shaped" heart, because the right
ventricle is enlarged.
 Cardiac Catheterization: Typically a catheterization is
done to possibly treat a PDA, not diagnose it.

TREATMENT OF PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS
 Medicines: Baby may need medicines help the heart work
better. In premature infants, the medicine indomethacin
may help close the PDA. Sometimes a baby may need
medicine such as diuretics (water pills). Diuretics help the
kidneys remove extra fluid from the body.
 Nutrition: Most infants with PDA eat and grow normally.
Some premature infants or those infants with large PDAs
may get tired when feeding. They may not be able to eat
enough to gain weight. Nutrition choices include High

 Surgery: Surgery can close PDAs. Surgical closure is often
advised for babies younger than 6 months who have large
defects and symptoms such as poor weight gain and fast
breathing.

 Rubella infection during pregnancy: If you contract German
measles (rubella) during pregnancy, your baby's risk of heart
defects increases.
